Due volumi in legatura coeva in mezza pelle verde con piatti marmorizzati, titoli dorati e fregi a secco sul dorso, tagli spruzzati azzurri; in quarto, cm 26.5 x 17.5, pp XVI 645 (3), XVI 563 (5), oltre 150 tavole litografiche, incluse le antiporte, con illustrazioni singole o accoppiate a mezza pagina. Presente in calce al secondo volume il registro di «Rettificazioni per il collocamento delle tavole» per il legatore. Lembo mancante sulle sguardie (presumibilmente per rimuovere una firma), sparsi e talora diffusi arrossamenti, qualche tavola brunita, lievi segni d'uso sulle legature ma complessivamente ben conservati. Edizione originale. Composto dall'avvocato Giuseppe Latty, il romanzo attinge a piene mani da vari testi contemporanei dedicati agli orrori del Santo Uffizio come Le Secret de Rome au XIXe siècle di Eugène Briffault (1799-1854) e Myste?res de l'Inquisition et autres socie?te?s secre?tes d'Espagne, opera di Madame Irène de Suberwick pubblicata con lo pseudonimo maschile di Victor de Féréal e note di Manuel Galo de Cuendias. Disinvoltamente saccheggiati anche gli apparati iconografici degli originali, ripresi dall'editore torinese Claudio Perrin nelle tavole disegnate dal fratello Carlo e affidate per l'impressione al litografo Jean Junck, iniziatore della cromolitografia nella capitale subalpina. La narrazione prende le mosse dalle origini dell'inquisizione per giungere alle vicende napoleoniche e al pontificato di Gregorio XVI, trattando anche di briganti (Gasparone), carbonari, società segrete e altri pittoreschi temi che, accanto ai toni violentemente anticlericali certo ben accolti nel Piemonte sabaudo in pieno slancio risorgimentale, contribuirono al grande successo di questo illustratissimo feuilleton, che conobbe una immediata seconda edizione (datata come l'originale 1849-1850) e una terza nel 1860-1864. Nel 1849 l'edizione, con il titolo «I tempi andati, ossia gli orrori.» poi ripreso nelle successive ristampe, era stata annunciata da Pomba che tuttavia non la distribuì, probabilmente perché l'editore torinese affrontava un un periodo di difficoltà economiche che gli impedirono di impegnarsi in una così costosa edizione illustrata (V. Bottasso 1991, p. 79). Sconosciuta alle principali bibliografie questa traduzione, Caillet ne cita le fonti e in particolare M.me de Suberwick e il suo romanzo «Sérieusement anti-clérical» e «Curieux.» (III, 10420). (tra cui l'antiporta del primo volume) contenenti al loro interno circa 400 disegni di scene storiche e inquisitorie. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pelle marrone; dorso a 4 grandi nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro agli scomparti. Piatti in tela un po' lisi. Diffuse fioriture sparse, peraltro esemplare nel complesso in buono stato di conservazione. Feuilleton violentemente anticlericale sugli orrori dell'inquisizione, libera traduzione di Giuseppe Latty (e da lui integrata e ampliata) di svariati romanzi francesi e spagnoli su tale falsariga, soprattutto quello di Irene de Suberwick, scrittrice e viaggiatrice tedesca che si firmava con lo pseudonimo maschile Victor de Féréal (Mystères de l'Inquisition, Paris, Boizard, 1845).
