Minimi segni del tempo alla legatura, alcune carte lievemente brunite, trascurabile alone limitato al margine delle ultime carte. Esemplare nel complesso fresco e ben conservato. Giuseppe Viola Zanini (1575/80 ca. - 1631), nativo di Vicenza, fu architetto, pittore, cosmografo e teorico dellâarchitettura. Quest'importante opera, tra le più importanti in materia dellâintero XVII secolo, è impostata sul sistema vitruviano e fortemente influenzata dallâexemplum palladiano. Così Cicognara (687): âQuesto libro ripieno di ottime nozioni in ogni teoria, ed ogni pratica dellâarte è scritto da un autore che era molto nudrito dei migliori principii. Giuseppe Viola Zanini (1575-1631), né à Vincence et mort à Padoue, fut un peintre et un architecte qui travailla dans les environs de Venise. Il fut davantage un peintre de décor, renommé pour tel, qu'un architecte actif, l'architecture l'intéressant comme moyen d'expression du décor peint. L'ouvrage est divisé en deux parties, la première partie s'intéressant aux origines de l'architecture et aux éléments qui la composent, ainsi que de la façon dont on doit construire, le second livre est lui entièrement dévolu aux cinq ordres. The work is divided into two parts, the first part focuses on the origins of architecture and its composing elements, as well as the way in which we must build; the second book is entirely devoted to the five orders. Vecchi camminamenti di tarlo che interessano solo il margine inferiore del primo volume, senza lesione di testo. Bruniture alla carta B8r. Occasionali fioriture. La maggiore variante rispetto alla prima edizione è il curioso scritto, apposto in fine al volume, circa la pulizia dei camini. Seconda edizione, dopo quella sempre padovana del Bolzetta (1621), di un articolato saggio teorico pratico di architettura, originariamente previsto in tre volumi. Ne è autore il cartografo e architetto Giuseppe Viola Zanini (Padova, 1575-1631), proveniente da famiglia impegnata in campo edile e allievo di Vincenzo Dotto. La prima parte si occupa delle tecniche di costruzione, e dei relativi materiali, la seconda scende nel dettaglio dei cinque ordini architettonici. "Particolarmente importante è il primo libro di Viola Zanini dedicato al magistero costruttivo del suo tempo, argomento che anticipa la letteratura tecnica che si andrà affermando proprio nel corso del Seicento: interessanti sono ad esempio le considerazioni statiche sulla forma degli archi e sull?impiego dei tiranti metallici, oppure l?esposizione delle modalità di assemblaggio di centine e capriate lignee, di esecuzione di pavimenti in terrazzo veneziano, di intonaci a marmorino, di coperture a lastre di piombo, e così via. Il contenuto del secondo libro, ispirato alle teorie di Vitruvio, Alberti e Palladio, costituisce in verità una stanca ripresa della precettistica degli ordini: il sistema esposto da Viola Zanini venne preso in considerazione, sottolineandone debiti e limiti, dal francese Roland Fréart de Chambray, che lo mise a confronto con quello dell?Alberti e degli altri maggiori trattatisti del Rinascimento nel suo "Parallèle de l?architecture antique et de la moderne" (Paris 1650). Interessante saggio sull'architettura che ne delinea le origini a partir…e dalla geometria piana e dalla prospettiva, passando poi alla scelta dei materiali (pietre, metalli, legnami), e alla progettazione di atri, portali, camini, ville in campagna (con osservazione dei venti), fabbricazione di stucchi, pavimenti, ecc. Il secondo libro dedicato alla simmetria, che si apre con frontespizio proprio, tratta i vari ordini (toscano, dorico, ionico, corinzio), archi, colonne, cornici, capitelli, camini, il tutto profusamente illustrato. Il trattato di Viola Zanini ebbe un discreto successo, come dimostra questa riedizione del 1677 che presenta ben poche modifiche rispetto all'edizione originaria del 1629. L'unica variante di rilievo in questa riedizione fu l'inserimento in calce al volume di un trattatello sul modo di eliminare il fumo nei camini.Comolli IV, 160- 167; Fowler 447; Millard 167; Cicognara 688; Riccardi II, 650.Rara seconda edizione molto pi? pregiata e completa della prima per le annotazioni.

Prima edizione, assai più rara della ristampa padovana del 1677. Giuseppe Viola Zanini, nativo di Vicenza, fu architetto, pittore, cosmografo e teorico dell'architettura. Aimed at a local audience, Zanini's ideas were exemplified through buildings and works of art predominantly drawn from Padua and nearby north Italian cities. Zanini's main contribution is that he provides the first formal discussion of the principles of quadratura ceiling painting, a subject explored in great depth by other 17th century authors, such as Agostino Mitelli. This large work is divided into two books. The three sections of the first book deal with the origins of architecture, building materials, and the 'elements' of architecture. The second book is devoted entirely to the five orders of architecture. The third section of the first book concerns the harmony of parts and decoration of buildings, but also the layout of buildings and their orientation, instructions for finding water, wind, and the zodiac among many other subjects? (Millard). ?Despite its local focus this book was widely studied outside Italy, and Fréart de Chambray and Blondel wrote much on it, remarking the disorder in which the notions were exposed, but also noticing the good doctrine of the author. Inigo Jones is said to have possessed a copy of it. To this list of famous architects having taken advantage from this book the name of Luigi Rossini can now be added?
