Just Another Asshole was an influential mixed-media publication series edited by Barbara Ess from 1978 to 1987. The submission process was open and collaborative, and each issue was produced in a different format (e.g., limited-edition zine by Ess, tabloid-sized graphic arts magazine, 4 pages in an issue of Artforum, photography book, LP record album, paperback book). Issue 6 of the magazine, co-edited with Branca, was published in the form of a pulp paperback book with writings by sixty-one artists from the early-80s downtown scene. It includes short stories, performance transcripts, aphorisms, plays, monologues, screenplays, and essays that offer a window into the gritty and dynamic culture of New York City before gentrification pushed the underground out of Lower Manhattan. May 13th, 2018) was an American composer who studied performing arts at Emerson College in Boston. After graduation, he formed two bands - Theoretical Girls in 1977 with Jeffrey Lohn, and later, The Static. In the eighties, his compositions for the Glenn Branca Ensemble included the several symphonies for which he was best known. Branca's compositions centered around multiple guitars - four or more, heavily amplified - augmented by a rock-based rhythm section of drums and bass. In later works, the composer began adding other instruments, including mallet guitar, keyboards, and occasionally a second drummer. Branca's minimalist compositions frequently required unusual guitar tunings. - "Robert Longo (*1953, Brooklyn) is known for his monumental, hyper-realistic images: powerful, dynamic charcoal drawings that captivate the viewer with their virtuoso technique and the visual power of the motif. He chooses photographs as models that capture dramatic situations at their most tense moments. The artist's aim is to highlight power - in nature, politics and history. Longo uses visual material that has been published thousands of times and has become part of our popular culture, often our collective memory. Collection of nine posters for performances by New York no wave artist and avant-garde musician Glenn Branca. One of the posters dates from 1975, five from 1978, and three from 1979. Locations include The Bastard Theatre, The Kitchen, Franklin Furnace, 3 Mercer Store, Tier 3, and Max's Kansas City. The posters in the collection advertise performances by Branca and his bands The Static, Theoretical Girls, and Daily Life, as well as theater pieces by Branca and frequent collaborator John Rehberger. Posters also advertise contemporary No Wave bands including Y Pants, The Gynecologists, and Arsenal, and creative luminaries of the period, including Laurie Anderson, John Lurie, Ann Messner, and Rhys Chatham. Avant-garde composer, guitarist, and luthier Glenn Branca first rose to prominence as a driving force in the New York no wave music scene, helping to lead to the formation of groups such as Y Pants and Sonic Youth.
