The 4.25 inch. (10 cm.) spheres applied with twelve printed gores and polar calottes pivoted via the poles within brass half-meridian rings, each mounted on top of alabaster columns with molded capitals, notable entasis to the shafts and Tuscan-style bases, the plinths with gilt fluted black marble cavetto top moldings and roundel-centered skirts incorporating shaped aprons. Each 70cm (27.5 inch.) high, 12.5cm (5 inch.) wide, 11cm (4.5 inch.) deep. The terrestrial and the celestial globe are a reduction, printed after the 1541 original by the early Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512-94) for Nicholas Perrenot (possibly of de Granville, Prime Minister to Emperor Charles V).…

Commonly referred to as 'Miniature Morden's' this map was printed as part of 'Fifty Six New and Accurate Maps of Great Britain' published in conjunction with Herman Moll in 1708. Mounted on contemporary paper with a brown stain to the verso of the right hand margin of the mounting paper, (not the map), folded lines across the top and bottom margins of the map, records society label to the reverse of the map. Oblong folio (22.5 x 11.25 in.) Two rotating wheels each showing hemisphere projection maps, which are attached to a thick brown base, w/ printed labels on front cover, original rivets still present, printed paper label and instructions on verso (some rubbing & edgewear, minor foxing & scuffing), still a G exemplar. First edition of this fascinating and scarce global map which allows the user to view steamship, or airline distance routes, as well as the principal railroads. The global map was designed so that opposite halves of the earth's surface could be rotated and synchronized enabling continuous and accurate spherical relationships across any point on the rotating maps. The label on the back lists the area in square miles, and population totals of the world. The map is dated to around 1941 because of the inclusion of Vichy France, the government allowed by the Nazi occupiers after the fall of France in 1940. …

WITH 24 FACSIMILE GLOBE GORES. Signed by Woodward on the limitation page. Just a hint of use to the box, booklet corners just a touch rubbed, otherwise as new. This sizable, attractive publication reproduces one of the largest complete sets of 16th century globe gores. Dating from around 1574, the original gores, which, when assembled, would make a globe measuring just under 70 centimeters in diameter, have been attributed to brothers Livio and Giulio Sanuto, Venetian cartographers and engravers. Little is known about the gores' origin; the accompanying essay suggests they may have never made it to the final stages of publication and production, possibly stopped by an outbreak of plague. This facsimile was created from the only extant set, in the collection of Arthur Holzheimer (1932-2025), and was produced by his research foundation, along with the Newberry Library. The gores are accompanied by a booklet by noted cartography scholar David Woodward (1942-2004), which provides background and the evidence supporting the attribution of the gores to the Sanuto brothers. …
