This is Volume XXVII in the series, Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society. It contains transcription of notes kept by Andrew Graham known collectively as his "Observations on Hudson's Bay." Andrew Graham (?-1815) was a member of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Graham, originally from Scotland, came to Churchill, a settlement in present-day Manitoba, in 1749 at a relatively young age. He eventually worked his way up the ranks and became Chief Factor at two of HBC's trading posts, York Fort and Prince of Wale's Fort. In 1775, he retired and returned to Edinburgh where he lived for the rest of his life. The difficulty of editing and compiling Graham's account is noted in the Preface and Introduction which is attributed to, in part, the relatively fragmented nature of his writings and the variety of subjects that he wrote about. In his "Observations," Graham provides richly detailed descriptions about various aspects of the Hudson's Bay region including its natural history, plants, wildlife, mineralogy, Indigenous populations, daily life at HBC posts, and difficulties or problems in trading policy and administration. The Contents page subdivides Graham's "Observations" into the following categories: "Description of Hudson Bay," "Mammals," "Birds," "Reptiles, Sea Mammals, Fish, Insects," "Flora," "Minerals," "Indians," "Eskimos," and "Life and Trade in the Bay." Five Appendices in back: "Appendix A: Andrew Graham: A Biographical Sketch," "Appendix B: The 'Observations' of Andrew Graham,'" "Appendix C: The Natural History Observations of Thomas Hutchins," "Appendix D: Graham's Presentations to the Edinburgh Royal Society," and "Appendix E: A New Hutchins Manuscript." Front colophon: "This copy is No. 1296 of a limited Edition which is issued only to subscribers to The Hudson's Bay Record Society.".

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - First published in 1967, British Locomotive Design is a review of British locomotive practice during the century and a quarter of steam's ascendency. The author shows how the Stephenson basic plan, while remaining essentially unchanged, was adapted over the years to meet the increasing demands made upon it in terms of haulage power and speed. The subject's widespread appeal is derived largely from the enormous variety of practical examples furnished by the products of the former companies, the groups and nationalisation, and, in the description of these by one who has a lifelong predilection for the steam engine in all its manifestations, readers will find due recognition accorded to the machines which had won their favour and, with others, have exercised a fascination as unquestionable as it is difficult to account for in set terms. This book will be of interest to students of engineering, technology, design and history.
