Hardback. These 38 Japanese tales and legends have been collected from many sources. Some of them have been selected from the Ko-ji-ki, or Record of Ancient Matters, which contains the mythology of Japan. Tales like GREEN WILLOW, THE FLUTE, THE SEA KING AND THE MAGIC JEWELS, THE PEONY LANTERN, THE ROBE OF FEATHERS, THE BELL OF DÅJÅJI, THE MOON MAIDEN, THE COLD LADY, A LEGEND OF KWANNON, THE SINGING BIRD OF HEAVEN and many, many more all with a uniquely Japanese flavour made more appealing by Warwick Goble's 16 exquisite illustrations. Many have been told from memory, being relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a school-fellow or a nurse. Certain of them, again, form favourite subjects which have been represented upon the Japanese stage and are still short and entertaining enough to hold a child's attention without them becoming bored. A few of the stories, now gathered together, have been translated into English and have previously appeared in one form or another; others are probably new to the 21st C. Western reader. 1979. Facsimile reprint. A near fine copy only marked by a discrete previous owners blind stamp on the front free endpaper. The d/w is very good with light sun fading of the spine and a thin strip along the top edge of the front panel.

Early printing; large 8vo (21.5 x 16 cm); frontispiece and 15 further colour illustrations by Warwick Goble throughout, two very small ownership stamps to front endpapers, slight foxing to half-title, very occasional small spot or mark, else a clean, very good copy; publisher's red cloth boards with gilt illustration to upper board, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, light spotting to endpapers, spine a little faded, tiny mark to lower board, else very good; [viii], 274pp, [2]pp. A handsome early edition of Charles Kingsley's classic tale The Water Babies. In the story, the protagonist - a young boy called Tom - falls into a river and is transformed into a magical creature called a Water Baby. The tale can be read as both a fable of Christian redemption and a comment on the bad treatment of England's poor. This early printing contains beautiful illustrations by Warwick Goble.
