Condizione: molto buono. 2 parti in 1 vol. in-4, pp. CXXI (a p. X inizia l saggio di Luigi Gonzaga di Castiglione), completo di antiporta con ritratto di Luigi Gonzaga (Gom. Corvi del., Gio. Volpatto inc.), elegante legatura coeva in vitello moucheté, cornice di filetti ai piatti, ricchi fregi e titolo al dorso, il tutto impresso in oro. Nel Poemetto il Godard sostiene l'importanza della filosofia (fonte di benessere per la società e la religione) e critica i sistemi educativi italiani allora vigenti. Gonzaga presenta, in forma di compendio della filosofia contemporanea, una serie di riflessioni su temi quali il rapporto tra Stato e Chiesa, la condanna di ogni tipo di dispotismo e l'elogio dell'antica Roma. Ambedue i componimenti vennero duramente criticati dal Baretti. Ottimo esemplare.

Reliure d'époque en plein veau raciné fauve, dos lisse à cinq caissons dorés délimités par des roulettes dorées, pièce de titre en maroquin brun, triple filet doré en encadrement des plats, double filet doré sur les coupes, tranches cailloutées bleues, contreplats et gardes marbrés en coquille. Coiffe inférieure manquante, épidermures au dos et aux coins, mors du premier plat légèrement fendu sur plusieurs centimètres, quelques discrets trous de vers et manques de cuir aux plats, frottements aux coupes, très bel état intérieur. Contemporary binding of fawn mottled calf, smooth spine divided into five gilt compartments by gilt rolls, brown morocco lettering-piece, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the board edges, blue speckled edges, and shell-pattern marbled pastedowns and endpapers. The lower cap lacking, some surface wear to the spine and corners, the upper joint slightly split for several centimetres, a few discreet wormholes and small areas of loss to the leather on the boards, light rubbing to the edges; the interior in very good condition. A marginal tear to p. 51 very slightly affecting the text, and a marginal stain to p. 47. * The spirit of the Enlightenment is vividly reflected in this essay on the achievements of the human mind by an "enlightened prince"the last descendant of the cadet branch of the Gonzaga dynastywho sold his lands in exchange for an annual life annuity; an eloquent writer and admirer of English and French philosophers, notably Montesquieu, whom he cites repeatedly in this volume; and, very much a libertine of his age, the lover of the poet Maria Maddalena Morelli. Carlo Dionisotti in Ricordi della scuola italiana, (Roma, 1998, Storia e letteratura, p. 62) attribuisce il poema a Godard poeta arcade nato a Malta nel 1740, abate e professore d'eloquenza, poeta arcade. Nell'ordine delle Scuoe Pie era una tradizione bene stabilita di esercitazioni poetiche per maestri e allievi che le annue accademie promovevano e celebravano anche per le stampe. DBI ad vocem "in seguito alla soppressione della Compagnia di Gesù Clemente XIV gli affidò la cattedra di eloquenza al Collegio Romano. AL soggiorno maltese risalgono. e alcuni componimenti anonimi pubblicati a Rieti e Roma fra cui il poema La felicità dei popoli scritto in occasione dell'elezione di Clemente XIV." In Arcadia dal 1769 col nome Cimante Micenio, ne ricoprì la carica di Custode.
