La région canopique connut très tôt un essor important, bien avant la fondation d'Alexandrie par Alexandre le Grand en 331 av. J.-C.; sa position géographique, à l'embouchure du Nil, constituant un carrefour entre l'Égypte et les autres… civilisations de la mer Méditerranée. Ainsi, les noms des villes de Canope, d'Héracléion, de Thônis, transmis par les auteurs anciens, véhiculaient des rêves de magnificence sans que les archéologues ne parviennent à les localiser. Ce mystère fut éclairci lorsque l'équipe de Franck Goddio, avec l'apport des technologies les plus modernes, entreprit de dresser une carte géophysique de la région ainsi que du grand port antique d'Alexandrie, constatant qu'une partie de la côte s'était effondrée et gisait six mètres au-dessous du niveau de la mer. Ce fait est expliqué par la conjonction de plusieurs causes: montée du niveau marin, lente subsidence de la côté du bassin oriental de la Méditerranée, effondrements et glissements de terrains catastrophiques déclenchés par des tremblements de terre et des phénomènes de liquéfaction des argiles. Une fois les sites complètement submergés vers le voie siècle, l'érosion naturelle et le recouvrement par d'importants dépôts d'alluvions apportées par les courants ont fini de dérober au regard des hommes seize siècles de civilisation parmi les plus riches du monde égyptien, de la Basse Epoque à la conquête arabe. Le delta du Nil, tant convoité pour ses richesses, avait vu sa civilisation influencée par ses conquérants: les Perses, les Grecs et la longue dynastie des Ptolémées, puis les Romains dont les amours de Jules César et de Cléopâtre resteraient célèbres, l'apparition de la religion chrétienne qui s'exprima dans la destruction des figures païennes mais aussi dans leur assimilation souvent insoupçonnée, et enfin la conquête arabe. Le lent phénomène d'acculturation bouleversa le panthéon des dieux, privilégiant les cultes d'Isis et d'Osiris ainsi que de Sérapis, et s'immisça dans la vie quotidienne, affectant le regard des Egyptiens sur un monde qui deviendrait le berceau de la civilisation occidentale. L'exposition rassemble 494 objets retrouvés lors des fouilles sous-marines de Canope, d'Héracléion et d'Alexandrie. Ils sont dûment inventoriés et commentés dans le catalogue. Pour la première fois est présenté en un même lieu tout le mobilier d'un temple ptolémaïque avec ses statues, parfois colossales, et ses objets de culte. A proximité foisonnaient toutes sortes d'artisanats et d'objets votifs, de céramiques et de bijoux destinés aux pèlerins. Cachés ou protégés par l'eau, ces artefacts nous permettent d'approcher comme jamais auparavant l'extraordinaire brassage de cultures et de peuples qui animait le delta du Nil. 0 g.
