Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Edited with Introduction and Annotations by John Anthony Butler; Originally written in the early 1600s; Clean, tight, unmarked; spine straight and uncreased; very minimal wear; This is an enigmatic work, being at once an early voyage imaginaire, a quasi-utopia, and an early work of science fict…ion. Preposterous as the notion must seem today that the harnessing of birds might actually take a man into space, the imaginative logic and detail with which the trip is prepared suspends our disbelief. The trip itself is a wonderful accumulation of religious and ancient lore, which Dr. Butler spells out in full historical and critical introduction, beginning with the theories of the ancients concerning the moon and its possible inhabitants. This work is further testimony to the fact that earth's closest neighbour in space has fire the human imagination, and has served as a locus for placing some of the social and natural "othernesses" that have been born of imagination and speculation.

Full-Leather. Condizione: Good. First Edition. The contemporary calf binding is quite rubbed, with a snag at the top of the spine, the two free endpapers are almost detached and edge chipped, but otherwise this "unsophisticated binding is solid. This Latin chronicle details the history of England during the reigns of three Tudor… monarchs, covering the period from Henry VIII through Mary. Godwin (1562-1633) is described by Wood as a ".good man, grave divine, skillful mathematician, excellent philosopher, pure Latinist, and incomparable historian." Elizabeth made him a bishop for his historianship. "During his sixteen years' tenure of the see of Llandaff he employed his leisure in improving his 'Catalogue of Bishops,' and in collecting materials for the civil and ecclesiastical history of England. In 1615 he published an improved edition of his 'Catalogue,' with a dedication to James I, and annals of the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary, in elegant Latin. As a reward for these labours he was by the king's desire translated to the see of Hereford." DNB It should be noted that these annals also include Queen Elizabeth's coming to the throne. Some copies have an errata leaf which is not present here. STC 11945. ESTC s12123 Extra Postage For All But Media.
