The binding sensitively repaired and some damp-staining of the endpapers and text. Very Good. The Prophecy of the Popes is a series of 112 Latin phrases, first published in 1595 and attributed to 12th-century archbishop Saint Malachy, that purportedly predicts the Catholic popes from Celestine II to the day of the final judgment. The prophecy is now believed to be a 16th-century concoction, though some believers today claim that Pope Francis is the final pope named in the prophecy. In this work, Gorgeu argues in favor of the veracity of the prophecy. Full title: Remarques sur les souverains Pontifes Romains, qui ont tenu le saint siege, depuis Celestin II. jusqu'a maintenant, avec leurs armes blasonnées, en taille douce : au sujet de la prophetie, qui se voit sous le nom de S. Divisées en deux parties A Abbeville, Par Laurens Maurry le jeune, 1659, 2 parties en un volume in-4, plein vélin de l'époque, dos lisse, muet, XII, 124 ; 128 pp. Vignette aux deux pages de titre, une autre précédant l'épître, bandeaux et lettrines, nombreuses figures gravées. Appartenance à la plume contemporaine de l'ouvrage au centre de la page de titre, l'une biffée, une infime tache d'encre en marge de 10 feuillets, une épidermure au haut du dos. Très bon exemplaire au demeurant. Edition originale de ce bel ouvrage qui manque aux principales bibliographies du domaine ésotérique. Il comporte 101 armoiries gravées en taille douce par Robert Cordier d'Abbeville, toutes blasonnées par l'auteur. Pour chacun des pontificats, l'abbé Gorgeu, moine jésuite au monastère des Minimes de Rouen, se livre à de savants commentaires et donne puis traduits les devises prophétiques « piece à piece, & chacune à part en autant de chapitres qu'il y a de devises, ou, en teste, les Armes du Pontife, dont il sera parlé , seront mises & exposées en taille douce, avec une exacte expression de leurs metaux & de leurs couleurs [.] (méthode de l'armorial de Segoing) outre quoi nous les blasonnerons aussi [.] Ensuite, l'Histoire ou une sommaire declaration du nom, de la famille, de la qualité, et des employs du Pape avant son élection, et du temps ou de la durée de son règne, prendra son rang [.] Puis la devise sera proposée avec sa version française en caractères & en nombre distincts; et l'interprétation donnée par Ciaconius [.] suivra. Enfin, les Remarques que nous y faisons achèveront le tour. » Souvent cité, cet ouvrage était déjà considéré comme rare au XIXème siècle. Il y est fait maintes fois référence dans l'étude critique sur la prophétie des papes attribuée à S. Malachie de l'abbé Joseph Maitre que Pierre Dujols (auquel manque notre titre), référence en 1909 et auquel il adjoint ses propres réflexions : « Cette célèbre prophétie, qui au lieu de perdre son prestige avec le temps, comme tant d'autres, voit, au contraire, s'accroître chaque jour sa popularité par la confirmation des événements, est peut-être le legs le plus merveilleux que nous ait fait le moyen âge. Son antiquité est incontestable : mais son auteur est plus discuté. M. Maître en attribue, suivant l'opinion générale, la paternité à St-Malachie, évêque d'Armagh en Irlande. [.] Suivant certains autres exégètes éminemment qualifiés, tels que M. de Stenay (Collin La Herte) étroitement orthodoxes cependant, la Prophétie des Papes serait l'oeuvre inspirée du fameux abbé hérétique Joachim de Flore, [.] Dans son laconisme équivoque, le texte de ce document, d'une infaillibilité étonnante, offrirait donc deux aspects, l'un favorable et l'autre hostile à la Papauté. Il serait composé à la manière de la Divine Comédie de Dante, que les uns vénèrent comme le plus beau monument de la foi Romaine, et les autres comme la plus subtile critique du pouvoir Pontifical. . » L'abbé Maitre émet en son temps d'élogieuses opinions à propos de l'abbé Gorgeu et de ses recherches : « Le P. Gorgeu fait à propos de la Prophétie des Papes des réflexions intéressantes. Cet ouvrage, qui fait époque dans l'histoire de la Prophétie, est très soigné et des plus intéressants [.]. Nous aurons souvent l'occasion de citer ce pieux et savant auteur. ».

Elaboriertes und interessantes Werk von Michel Gorgeu, Jesuitenmönch im Monastère des Minimes in Rouen, zur Malachiasweissagung. Die Prophezeihung des Malachias, als zahlreich kommentierte und besprochene Papstprophezeihung, die 1595 erstmals gedruckt wurde, hatte ihre erste große und wichtige Hochphase vom späten 16. bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein. Fälschlich dem irischen Wunderpriester und zeitweisen Erzbischof Malachias zugeschrieben, was, soweit vermutet wird, auf den Bericht seines Freundes Bernhard de Clairveaux über dessen Sehergabe zurückzuführen ist, verbleibt die tatsächliche Urheberschaft bis heute ungeklärt und ist noch immer Gegenstand weitläufiger Überlegungen und regen Interesses. Gorgeu, sich offenkundig der bereits zeitgenössisch aufgekommenen Zweifel am Wahrheitsgehalt der Malachiasweissagung bewusst, begegnet jenen bereits im Vorwort: "[.] Ne vous étonnez donc pas, si je dis quelque chose sur la prédiction, qui se lit sous le nom de S. Malachie Archevesque d'Armach & Primat d'Irlande, encore que cette prédiction ne vous semble pas tout à fait autentique. La vérité, qui en sera découverte, donnera les lumières pour la connoissance des Papes, qui ont été depuis Celestin Second, jusqu'à présent; on y verra leur succession canonique, continuée sans interruption; on y connoîtra leurs maisons, leurs blazons, leurs bons exemples; & enfin, nous y apprendrons à rien négliger, pour nous préparer au jugement de Dieu. Il n'y a pas sujet d'étonnement de voir nôtre employ, où il y a tant de fruicts à esperer.". Gorgeus gehört zu den maßgeblichen, zeitgenössischen Arbeiten, die die Richtigkeit und Genauigkeit der Malachiasweissagung nachzuweisen suchten, wobei er sich ausschließlich in der Retrospektive bis hin zum Publikationszeitpunkt Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts, bewegt und daher seine Beobachtungen, begonnen bei Papst Coelestin II., mit Papst Alexander VII. abschließt. Die Inhalte der Malachiasweissagung finden sich im lateinischen Original zu Beginn des Werkes zitiert. Gorgeus Kommentar gilt bereits Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als rares Werk. Einband etwas berieben und leicht rissig, Lederrücken mit winziger Fehlstelle am oberen Kapital, Seiten nur leicht gebräunt und selten mit sehr dezentem Wasserrand, eine Lage etwas gelockert, Wappenkupfern gelegentlich mit Durchschlag auf der vorigen bzw. folgenden Seite (die Stiche selbst hervorragend erhalten), Paginierung der Wappenkupfern an einer Stelle springend (Stiche jedoch vollständig), zwischen den Seiten 122 und 123 finden sich vier privat eingebundene Blatt mit vier die Reihe fortsetzenden, handschriftlichen Papsteintragungen in Tinte sowie zugehörigen kolorierten Wappenzeichnungen. Eindrucksvolles und noch immer schönes Exemplar. First edition. French language edition with small part in Latin. Leather binding of the times with 5 raised bands, gilt embossed title on spine and book decoration as well as marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Both title pages with engraved title vignette, altogether 101 numbered heraldic copper engravings within the text (most of them about 4 x 3,5 cm), 4 unnumbered copper engravings within the text, as well as woodcut vignettes and initials. The engravings were made by Robert Cordier, engraver from Abbeville. Also with engraved bookplate after Pierre Giffart, linking this copy to the family of De Villers de Rousseville. Very rare and interesting work by referring to the "Prophetia Sancti Malachiae Archiepiscopi, de Summis Pontificibus", the Prophecy of the Popes, wrongly attributed to the prophecy of St. Malachy and since the late 16th century until today topic of comprehensive speculation and research. Michel Gorgeu was a Jesuit monch at the Monastère des Minimes in Rouen and contributed his work advocating the Prophecy of the Popes, concentrating on the first 83 mentioned popes, beginning with Pope Celestine II and ending with Pope Alexander VII. The book at hand is often referred to concerning the Malachy Prophecy. Nevertheless it has already been difficult to obtain a copy since the 19th century. Binding a bit rubbed and fissured, spine with tiny defect to the leather, pages lightly darkened and seldomly with unobtrusive tidemark, one section a little loosened, numbering of the engravings partly not continuous (engravings nevertheless complete), 4 pages privately bound between pages 122 and 123 with coloured armorial sketches and notes in ink continuing Gorgeu's work, copper engravings sometimes with ink show-through.
