One critic noted: " Of those artists throughout the world who have dedicated themselves to the automobile only a select few have achieved worldwide renown, one of them being the German Walter Gotschke. His impressionistic gouaches not only portray the typical character of each race driver and his driving style, along with the authenticity of an historic event and cars true to the smallest detail, but also make the race atmosphere palpable so that one can almost hear and smell the event from his art." Seldom Seen, Original Daimler Mercedes-Benz 1938 Third Reich "Victory Poster" Serial Number 73 1138 4 X R Featuring Iconic Mercedes-Benz Works Drivers Hermann Lang and Rudolf Caracciola plus Great Britain's First Grand Prix Driver Richard Seaman LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ Designed as a piece of Nazi party-political propaganda by Adolf Hitlers Wehrmacht, this official "Successes" poster was published by Mercedes-Benz in December 1938 to celebrate the "Silver Arrows" dominance of the 1938 Grand Prix racing season. It not only represents an epic season and historic motor racing milestones for the Mercedes-Benz team but also became a precursor to what would later be recognized as Formula One branding being adopted to sell luxury cars. English driver Richard Seaman had signed a provisional contract with Mercedes-Benz in December 1936 following successful tests at the Nürburgring in November of that year. But his appointment famously required the personal approval of Adolf Hitler, which was granted before the finalization of his role as a works driver for the 1937 season. The lavishly illustrated poster was also a victory announcement for the 1938 Swiss Grand Prix were the team achieved a dominant "1-2-3" podium clean sweep at the Bremgarten Circuit located in the Bremgartenwald forest on the north-western outskirts of Bern, Switzerland. Further, two new international land speed records are celebrated by works driver Rudolf Caracciola who drove the "flying kilometer" on the Frankfurt am Main-Darmstadt Reichsautobahn (public road) on January 28th 1938, reaching an average speed of 432.7 km/h in his 5.6 Litre V12 Mercedes-Benz W125 Rekordwagen (pictured). This car has been featured in various art collections, including the Mercedes-Benz art collection painted by Andy Warhol. The artwork, created by renowned Austrian illustrator Walter Gotschke, exemplifies the dynamic, speed-oriented graphic design used by Mercedes-Benz to market their engineering superiority during the "Golden Age" of motor racing and Gotsche would go on to become Daimler-Benz official artist in 1938. Adolf Hitler's government had funded Mercedes-Benz racing programme for six years, from 1933 until the outbreak of World War II in 1939. After taking power, Hitler paid an annual 500,000 Reichsmark (RM) stipend to Mercedes-Benz to help showcase German industrial superiority through Grand Prix racing. This state sponsorship birthed the legendary "Silver Arrows" racing cars, which dominated European Grand Prix racing from 1934 to 1939. Official "Erfolge" posters served as powerful tools to demonstrate German technological prowess on a global stage, and were backed by government funding. The dedicated motor racing fund ceased in September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, causing Mercedes-Benz technical focus to shift to military production (aircraft engines and heavy trucks) for the duration of the war. While racing subsidies had been Hitler's most public form of support, Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union (later Audi) enjoyed massive government contracts for rearmament through 1945. The poster doubles as a fold-out luxury brochure for the Mercedes-Benz luxury branding with an itinerary of their cars listing appearances at Concours events throughout 1938 as well as off-road and endurance themed motoring events. DIMENSIONS Poster sized approximately 300 x 210mm when folded. Opens out to approximately 300 x 830mm. Printed on both sides. Weight approximately 30 grams prior to packaging. CONDITION In very condition but with SOME LIGHT VISIBLE WEAR including creasing, folds, bumps, surface scuffs, staining, foxing, discoloration hence SOLD AS SEEN offered WITHOUT PROVENANCE, nevertheless an extremely rare and important pre WWII MERCEDES-BENZ artifact. PAYMENT, SHIPPING & INSURANCE PACKAGED FLAT BETWEEN POLYSTYRENE BOARDS and shipped with international tracking. Please note any import duty is the buyers responsibility.
