Embossed brown boards, 546pp, index. No illus. This present editi…on contains the entire work as edited by Scott in 1811. Phibert de Gramont (b. 1621). He was exiled from Paris for courting one of the mistresses of te rench king and established himself in London at the Court of Charles II. There he married Elizabeth Hamilton, one of the great beauties of the English court, whose brother, Anthony, is the author of this memoir. It was said of Gramont that he was able to pursue gallantries well into old age without looking ridiculous. He was over 80 when he provided his brother-in-law with the papers for writing his memoirs. These memoirs remain a source of information about the court and is a masterpiece of style and wit. (1.8 JM HOQ 101/3 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

Leather. Condizione: Good. An historical work on the court of Charles the Second. Lacking title page and frontispiece. This work is Bohn's 'Extra Volume' as the publisher doubted 'the propriety of including Count Grammont's Memoirs in his 'standard library''. This is because the work, despite being praised as 'a classic work, th…e delight of every man and woman of taste', is full of 'curious historical information'. To the leaf on the verso of the half-title, Bohn questions if this work meets up to the standard of other works in his library series which is why it is published as an 'extra volume'. This work was originally claimed by Antoine Hamilton to have been dictated to him by Philibert, Count de Gramont, however it is likely that Hamilton was the true author. Gramont was the protagonist of these memoirs. This particular edition is edited by Sir Walter Scott. This work made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. In a half vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and t o the extremities. Handling marks and a few small tidemarks to the spine. Vellum has dulled. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, R B Colvin. First three leaves are loosening. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Final two leaves are loosening to the tail of pages. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spotting to pages. Good. None (illustratore). book.

ABOUT KING CHARLES II King Charles II (1630- 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651 and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685. Charles II was the eldest surviving child of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and Henrietta Maria of France. After Charles I's execution at Whitehall on January 30, 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War, the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II king on February 5, 1649. However, England entered the period known as the English Interregnum or the English Commonwealth, with a government led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on September 3, 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe. Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. Charles spent the next nine years in exile in France, the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Netherlands. A political crisis after Cromwell's death in 1658 resulted in the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, and Charles was invited to return to Britain. CONDITION REPORT The volumes are in VERY GOOD antiquarian condition for 225-year-old volumes. Square spines with firm hinges and joints. Rubbing to boards and extremities. Corners bumped. Foxing to endpapers and on/near plates. Generally quite clean with a sporadic smudge, page creasing, bent corner or other sign of handling.
