Der Halbkontinent ist eine Weltregion, an der exemplarisch gezeigt wird, wie untrennbar Räume sowohl Produkte…als auch Agenten der Globalisierung historisch waren und aktuell sind. Nordamerika war transnational, bevor es "national" wurde. Die beiden Nationalstaaten USA und Kanada haben aufgrund der regionalen (sektionalen) Diversität und der ethnischen Pluralität das Moment des "Transnationalen" nie ganz verloren - was das "nation building" in beiden Fällen prekär werden ließ. Besonders deutlich ist dies im Bürgerkrieg zwischen den Nord- und den Südstaaten der USA von 1861 bis 1865 sowie in der verspäteten Souveränität Kanadas im Jahr 1931 zu sehen. Diese Spannung zwischen Transnationalität und der Herausbildung der beiden Nationalstaaten kann als gemeinsames Strukturmerkmal von USA und Kanada gelten. Die wachsende hegemoniale Bedeutung der USA steht historisch in dieser transnationalen Kontinuität. Transnationalität eignet sich auch als leitende Fragestellung zur Globalgeschichte Nordamerikas - zumal sie es auch erlaubt, die allmähliche Diffusion der USA in den spanischen Einflussbereich im Südwesten bis hin zur etablierten Interventionspolitik gegenüber den selbständigen Staaten in Mittelamerika und der Karibik zu berücksichtigen. Die AutorInnen bieten einen Überblick zur Geschichte der Vereinigten Staaten und Kanadas seit etwa 1600 bis in die Gegenwart. Die einzelnen Beiträge folgen einer narrativen Chronologie, geben aber durchaus auch Gelegenheit zu "Längsschnitten" und sind stets auf globalgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge ausgerichtet.
