Gerichtet an den Bibliothekar Paul Geissler (1897-1992), seit 1946 Direktor der Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg. --- Ohne Nennung seines Namens; die Karte stammt jedoch aus seinem Nachlass. Auszüge: "Sehr geehrter Herr Kollege, nehmen Sie meinen aufrichtigsten Dank für Ihre freundlichen Glückwünsche, mit denen Sie zeitlich noch durchaus in guter Gesellschaft waren! Ihr Brief kam nämlich ziemlich gleichzeitig mit einem Glückwunsch von H. Harressowitz. Zum Sachlichen kann Ihnen Ihr Amtsvorgänger bestätigen, daß ich das viele Freundliche, was der Geburtstag mir brachte, in Demut und wie ich hoffe nicht ohne Humor hingenommen habe. Man verträgt ja bei solchem Anlaß mehr an gutgemeinter Anerkennung, als man nach abgeflauter Feststimmung und bei wieder klar gewordener Überlegung für berechtigt anerkennen darf. Mit dieser Einschränkung hat mich natürlich das schöne Bilderbuch, das auch vielen andern die alte Staatsbibliothek lebendig erhalten wird, sehr gefreut. Von Ihrer Sorge um das Wohl Ihrer Benutzer, und nicht nur derer in Augsburg, ist mir das große Entgegenkommen ein Beweis, das Sie meinem Freund Viktor von Wachter bei seinen schwäbischen Familienforschungen erzeigen. Die vor 8 Tagen eingezogenen neuen Leute haben mir nicht nur für jeden Samstag und Sonntag freien Zutritt zu meinen Büchern zugestanden, sondern uns auch das ganze Dachgeschoss überlassen und uns ermöglicht, uns eine kleine elektrische Küche einzurichten, was für meine Frau eine gewaltige Erleichterung ist. Januar 1957 ebendort) war ein deutscher Bibliothekar und Orientalist. Leben: Gratzl besuchte das Luitpold-Gymnasium in München, bevor er Klassische Philologie und Semitische Sprachen in München und Marburg studierte. 1899 legte er sein Staatsexamen ab und begann als Volontär an der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Hier blieb er sein gesamtes Berufsleben, unterbrochen nur von einem Jahr an der Universitätsbibliothek Würzburg. 1906 wurde er promoviert. 1913-1914 unternahm er eine mehrmonatige Studienreise durch Nordafrika und Asien. 1921 wurde er Oberbibliotheksrat, 1929 dann 1. Direktor und 1936 Stellvertreter des Generaldirektors. Gratzl lehnte 1921 die Aufforderung ab, die UB Breslau zu übernehmen, ebenso lehnte er 1929 ein Angebot ab, Generaldirektor der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek zu werden. Gratzls Haupttätigkeitsfeld war die Erwerbung, er verfasste auch das entsprechende Kapitel im ?Handbuch der Bibliothekswissenschaft". Sein Spezialgebiet waren orientalische Handschriften und Bucheinbände. Im Alter von 60 Jahren ging er in Pension. Sein Nachlass befindet sich in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München.
