Bentley for Six Poems by Mr. T. Gray is a distinctive example of eighteenth-century English illustrated book design. Gray's poems were accompanied by designs by Richard Bentley, whose elaborate ornamental compositions gave the volume an unusually unified character, bringing together poetry, typography and illustration. The original edition is notable for the close relationship between text and image. Bentley's designs frame the poems with architectural, emblematic and rococo elements characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century book illustration, making the volume an important example of the period's decorative approach to the printed book. This Woodbank Press edition includes reproductions of the illustrations first published in the 1753 edition. The text is set in Monotype Bell, the revival of the typeface cut by Richard Austin for John Bell in the late eighteenth century, and printed on Fabriano Tiepolo, a substantial cotton wove paper. The volume contains the illustrations originally published in the 1753 edition. Each copy is bound by hand in leather with marbled boards, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and marbled edges, and is housed in a slipcase. The edition sets Bentley's eighteenth-century designs against restrained classical typography and traditional hand binding. According to Hazen, there were three distinct editions dated 1753, all with identical wording on the titlepage. Hazen suggests that this is the third edition. There is no exclamation mark in the rows of printer's flowers on the third and fourth pages of the 'Explanation of the prints'; and letter "d" is printed properly throughout p. 26. Lacking half-title and therefore unable to confirm Hazen's first issue point of the half-title reading 'Designs, &c.'.
