Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First thus. First edition thus, Fine/Fine, Second printing A confession from both a bookseller and a Wodehouse fan: when we first read this a couple of decades ago, we thought it was the funniest book we had ever read, and nothing in the years since has changed our mind. It is one of the few stories where Wodehouse has the various worlds that he created collide: the character of Psmith ("the P is silent, as in phthisis, psychic, and ptarmigan") originated in Wodehouse's prep school stories, but here he lands in Blandings Castle, the abode of the dopey Lord Emsworth, his scatterbrained son Freddie Threepwood, and Lord Emsworth's formidable but exasperated sister, Lady Constance (aka "Connie"), who at least tries to run the household on rational lines. (Lord Emsworth's beloved prize-winning pig Empress of Blandings doesn't appear until later books.) Don't ask about the plot. It's the usual Wodehouse mayhem involving incognito characters, the pseudo-theft and recovery of personal items, plucky damsels in need of an honest living, martinets in need of getting what's coming to them, and general all-round confusion that ends in happiness for the good guys and comeuppance for the bad guys. Psmith himself is a delightful fop, full of pretention but also of good heart and honest ethics, not afraid to make of a fool of himself in the pursuit of justice or love. You can imagine him leading the way amongst the Bertie Wooster crowd mainly because, while no Jeeves, he's head and shoulders above them in the brains department but still understands their sense of fun. This edition, published by The Folio Society in 1989, is a brilliant success at matching the text, originally published in 1923, with its format. This is particularly true of the illustrations by Paul Cox. (There are many, ranging in size from small icons used to fill up the blank space at the end of a chapter to a full page size.) They have the appearance of the pen-and-ink drawings that are used in classic "New Yorker" cartoons from the first half of the 20th century, so much so that we assumed Cox was from that era and these were reproductions. Not a bit of it-he was born in 1957! The cover of this volume features one of his drawings of Our Hero, Psmith, dashing about with an umbrella (see Chapter 3 for the details) but here the umbrella is colored deep red. It's the same red that matches the color of the slipcase that holds and protects the volume and which stains the top edge of the text block. It's all (to use a term from the era) very snazzy. The book is in fine condition. It is bound in gray cloth with green undertones. There are no signs of wear or damage to the binding, and it is tight and square. The illustration on the front cover is printed in black and red, and the cursive lettering on the spine is printed in black. The end papers are colored the same red as the umbrella. The slip case is also in fine condition and is covered in paper in that same red. There is a light bump on the bottom rear front corner and a tiny nick in the paper at the top front edge, but otherwise in perfect condition. There are no marks, folds, or tears to the pages. The top edge of the text block is stained a dark red that coordinates with all the other reds previously mentioned. It is copiously illustrated with black-and-white drawings of all sizes. This is a delightful read no matter the format, but in this case, the design delightfully enhances the reading pleasure. Cox, Paul (illustratore).…
