Written in 1761 on the death of his wife, Dr. Gregory's famous book of advice to his daughters was first published by his son James posthumously in 1774. Running through at least six editions in its first year alone, the huge popularity of the work attests its influence on the social mores of early English novelists such as Jane Austen.

Gregory's principles were later attacked by Mary Wollstonecraft in A Vindication of the Rights of Women.
