Einband etwas lichtrandig, sonst gut und sehr saber. - Aus dem Text von Heinz Fuchs: Auch innerhalb der sogenannten informellen" Malerei entstehen die Bilder weder als Akte der Willkür noch als unwillkürliche mediale Reaktionen, auch ergeben sie sich nicht allein schon aus der Auslieferung an die…Eigenwilligkeit ungewöhnlicher Materialien. Das beweisen die Werke der nicht gerade zahlreichen wirklich schöpferischen Künstler. Es ist verständlich, daß zunächst die Spontanität und das Improvisatorische bei der neuen Malerei besonders betont und die Befreiung von der vielfach zur Formel erstarrten Form in immer erneuter Wiederholung genossen wurde. Aber Revolution an sich ist noch nicht schöpferisch; sie bietet scheinbar unbeschränkte Freiheit, indem sie der Masse wie der Materie freien Lauf läßt; aber schließlich müssen sich neue Formen entwickeln. Als Otto Greis Anfang der fünfziger Jahre seine ersten tachistischen" Bilder malt, da sind es sogleich solche Empfindungen, die auch kritisch bei ihm ins Bewußtsein treten; ebenso wie er den leergewordenen Formrequisiten des abstrakten Akademismus mißtraute, so scheut er sich nun die neuen Mittel und die sich ausbreitende neue Malmanier schon gleichzusetzen mit Bild" und neuem Inhalt". Intuitiv und erfinderisch war ihm, mit dädalischen Künsten gleichsam, ein ikarischer Aufschwung zu großer Höhe geglückt. Eines der markantesten Bilder jener Phase ist vielleicht das Ikarus" betitelte Gemälde von 1953. Aber dann setzt die kritische Wandlung ein, immer erneutes Prüfen und Erproben der künstlerischen Mittel auf ihre Fähigkeiten. Schier zahllose Studienblätter und Zeichnungen bilden das Versuchsfeld, auf welchem dieser Maler, der ursprünglich den Ingenieurberuf gewählt, geradezu nüchtern und mit naturwissenschaftlicher Akribie seine Beobachtungen macht. Hier studiert er die unvorhergesehenen Spannungsfelder" und Wirkungsquanten" und die geheimen wechselweisen Beziehungen und Übereinstimmungen dessen, was gegenüber auf der Bildfläche geschieht, mit der eigenen inneren und äußeren Anschauung der Welt.
