TEXT IN DANISH. - Study of brothels and prostitution in Denmark, with short studies also by Troels Smith. - Some excerpts from an automated translation of her biography into English: in 1937 she received her medical degree, went on a study trip to New York in 193839, and earned her doctoral degree in 1941 from the University of Copenhagen with a thesis titled Group Antigens in Human Organs. A Discussion of the "Secreter" "Nonsecreter" Phenomenon. This work, which contributed to the emerging understanding of tissue typing, was highly valued. - From 194849, Hartmann studied at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and earned a Master of Public Health. In Denmark, she was recognized as a specialist in dermatovenerology in 1951, and in pathological anatomy and histology in 1952. - Through her books on medical-social and historical topics, Hartmann became more widely known. In 1946, she published The Girls They Left Behind about the "German girls"an investigation primarily conducted at the Copenhagen police station in 194345 into the sexual relations between German occupying troops and Danish women. Housing and Brothels from 1949 is a history of prostitution in Denmark, written with humor, insight, and without prejudice or sentimentality. A new, expanded edition appeared in 1967.
