Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. B&W frontispiece (illustratore). (NAP). Sewn binding, full cloth-covered boards, in dustjacket. A beautiful little book, bound in real cloth. This is the American edition, but printed (and apparently bound) in Britain by Latimer, Trend & Co. Ltd, Plymouth. The book is opening widely but the sewn binding is firm and the hinges are intact. Cloth and gilt titles are unfaded; a little wear to cloth at lower edges. A rather large mark on one page, light pencil marks on flyleaf, small spot last numbered page, else pretty clean. Pages are lightly toned. Unclipped, soiled dustjacket has sun-darkened spine, a 3/4" tear at bottom edge of front panel, a shorter tear near spine, and edgewear at bottom spine-end. The beauty of the dark blue cloth spine with its gilt titles may lead you to ditch the dustjacket as unworthy of the book.

First edition thus - The Muses' Library edition. viii, 246pp. and a frontispiece portrait. John Clare (1793-1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption. His work underwent major re-evaluation in the late 20th century, and he is now seen by many as a major 19th-century poet. This selection of his poetical works has been edited with an introduction by the British poet, writer, editor and critic, Geoffrey Grigson (1905-1985). The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with a name and date written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and the spine is darkened. The bottom of the spine is lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping with some creasing and small tears at the top of the spine that have been repaired on the reverse with tape.
