Softcover. 99 p.; 18 cm. Contents: Preface -- Part I. The historic background, by Margaret Deanesly: 1 the intention of the Ordinal and its commentary, 2 the apostolic faith and `prophesyings' down the centuries; 3 existentialist reunion schemes and the Ordinal as part of such a scheme -- Part II. The Draft Ordinal, by Geoffrey G. Willis: introduction, 1 the preface, 2 the proposed rites of ordination, 3 the power of absolution, 4 the term `presbyter', 5 ordination by `reconciliation', 6 conclusion. -- `If we mistake not, the Scheme is the fifth report on Anglican-Methodist unity. Each report seems to us to move farther away from Anglican and nearer to Methodist principles. Evidently in the diplomatic negotiations which have been going on, the Methodists have won all along the line. The essential functions of a bishop appear to be jurisdiction, confirmation, and ordination. But the Methodist bishops under Stage One have very ill-defined functions. Methodism will therefore inherit the names, but hardly the reality, of the traditional orders of the Christian ministry. This elaborate and subtle scheme seems likely to produce little but disturbance and stupefaction among the clergy and people. Let it be abandoned before it is too late and before the Church is irremediably split into two. (p. 98 f.) Good, sewn, in orig. green wrapper. Front cover rubbed.
