Joseph-Pierre Durand (1826-1900), plus connu sous le nom de Durand de Gros et aussi sous le pseudonyme de J.P. Philips, est l'initiateur en France de la médecine par l'hypnose. Son ?uvre philosophique (de tendance leibnizienne) et anthropologique est bien difficile à classer car, à l'instar de nombreux savants du XIXe siècle, il touchait un peu à tout. Comme son père, il est un fervent adepte de la pensée fouriériste et des idées républicaines. Lors du coup d'État de 1851, il est condamné à un an de prison ferme et 10 000 Fr d'amende pour un article trop virulent. Alors que son père est arrêté, il parvient à se cacher et à partir en Angleterre en 1852. En exil à Londres, il assiste aux premières expériences de suggestion hypnotique récemment importées des Etats-Unis sous le nom d'électro-biologie. Afin de conserver secret son retour en France en 1853, il utilise le pseudonyme de docteur J.-P. Phillips et se fait l'apôtre de cette science nouvelle par des conférences et la rédaction d'un ouvrage, l'Electro-dynamisme vital, en 1855. C'est après un séjour à Philadelphie, où il termine ses études médicales interrompues, qu'il publie le Cours de Braidisme ou hypnotisme nerveux. Sa nécrologie datée du 17 novembre 1900 souligne qu'il fut « le hardi précurseur des écoles de Nancy et de la Salpêtrière ».

His essays on the physiology of perception and the relationship of the mind to the outside world do not, by his own admission, use groundbreaking medical observations, but he readdresses well-versed scientific knowledge with philosophical questions, such as the morality of reflexive actions. The final essay contains a semi-critical response to positivism and Comte's 'general science of things', with Durand proposing his own methodological structure or taxonomy of ideas.

Ces études d'anatomie comparative portent particulièrement sur la torsion humérale. Il en dégage une interprétation transformiste lamarkienne par adaptation au milieu.
