Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Good. British Security (1946) By Chatham House Study Group | Royal Institute of International Affairs ISBN: none (classified before barcodes existed) Condition: Good as sold by Crappy Old Books This is British Security , published in 1946 , when: The war had technically been won, The empire was beginning to fray, And a group of very serious people at Chatham House sat down to ask the immortal question: ?Right, what now?? The result is this slim, sombre-looking volume in black cloth, which looks for all the world like a small, portable think tank. What?s actually inside? It?s not a spy thriller (sorry), but it is the intellectual scaffolding behind a whole era of policy. Inside you?ll find: A cool-headed analysis of what ?security? means after two world wars and a rapidly approaching Cold War. Reflections on: Britain?s strategic position (spoiler: island, useful but awkward), the state of Europe, the role of the Commonwealth and colonies, and the dawning realisation that the United States is now That Guy. Arguments about defence, diplomacy, economics and alliances ?written by people who use the word ?considerable? a lot and mean it. It?s basically a policy white paper in hardback , intended for ministers, civil servants, academics and that rare bird: the private citizen who voluntarily reads such things. The tone: calm, posh, mildly anxious The Chatham House Study Group writes the way: Very educated people talk when they?re trying not to sound worried. No exclamation marks, just: ?It may reasonably be concluded?? ?Certain dangers cannot be excluded?? ?It would be unwise to neglect?? Expect: Understatement deployed as a defensive weapon. Statistical and strategic arguments without a single pie chart. The occasional polite but pointed reminder that ignoring problems does not, in fact, cause them to go away. It?s all very British: the world may be collapsing, but we will discuss it in complete sentences. This particular copy From the photo: Plain black (or very dark) cloth boards with a few scuffs and edge rubs; no dust jacket, no design frills, just pure ?government-adjacent pamphlet, but make it hardback.? Condition: Good ? in Crappy Old Books terms, that means: Binding solid, pages firmly attached?no security breaches in the text block. Corners bumped, spine ends a little softened; the bookish equivalent of a bowler hat that?s seen service. Some light surface marks on the boards, as if it has spent decades sliding in and out of filing cabinets or earnest briefcases. Inside, you can expect: Clean, very legible text, probably with that slightly rough post-war paper. Possibly a library stamp or previous owner?s name that reads like a minor character in a le Carré novel. Why you might actually want this You?re into international relations, Cold War pre-history or British strategic studies , and you want a primary-era document, not just modern commentary. You like to read what experts were saying before everything became obvious in hindsight. You enjoy the aesthetics of old policy books: slim, dark, and slightly intimidating on the shelf. You?re building a collection of Chatham House / RIIA publications and this fills a pleasing gap between ?War Aims? and ?Future of Europe? It?s also fantastic source material if you: write historical fiction, run Cold War RPGs, or simply enjoy muttering, ?We were warned? at passing footnotes. The vibe Reading British Security (1946) feels like: Sitting in on a post-war seminar where everyone is exhausted but determined to think clearly for at least 120 more pages. Watching the transition from wartime survival to long-term strategy : How do we stop this happening again? What does ?power? look like now? Who are we if we?re no longer the unquestioned top of the league table? Realising that many of the questions they were asking in 1946 are? awkwardly familiar in the 21st century. It?s sober, thoughtful, and utterly devoid of buzzwords?security before it became a branded conference circuit. Condition vs. Gravitas Physically: Good ? scuffed but sturdy, like an old civil servant with a good memory. Intellectually: restrained, rigorous, and surprisingly readable if you enjoy policy-speak done properly. Offered by Crappy Old Books , where the covers are plain, the content is serious, the condition is Good, and British security?at least in 1946?still fits neatly between two modest black boards. .
