Cette importante publication de Gueniot occupe les pages 416-430 de ce volume. Si la persistance de diverses sensations, notamment de la douleur, dans les parties retranchées par une amputation avait été déjà mentionnée, il s'agit ici de la première étude détaillée et avec des données novatrices. Cette publication anticipe le célèbre ouvrage de Mitchell, devenu classique. En particulier Gueniot décrit, dans environ 50% des cas, l'illusion d'un raccourcissement et de retrait progressifs éprouvée par le patient dans les parties amputées (" hétérotopie subjective des extrémités") ; il précise qu'il s'agit en général d'un élément favorable pour la guérison. Guéniot ajoute que l'existence même de cette hallucination fait comprendre "l'importance, dans l'état normal, de la notion des distances réciproques de nos organes de la vie de relation, toutes les fois que nous exécutons des mouvements en dehors du contrôle de la vue." Alexandre Guéniot (1832-1935) agrégé de chirurgie en 1869, devint chirurgien des hôpitaux de Paris et membre de l'Académie de médecine.
