Quarter-morocco and cloth, top edge gilt.large 4to, 34 cm, 81, 81 pp, ills. (the leaves with the signed etchings not present ). From the introduction - "This book is an attempt to clarify the boundaries of a subject which is beginning to claim the attention of collectors: the phenomenon known as the etching revival in Britain. . the brisk rise in saleroom prices of etchings makes it obvious that the time is now ripe for the re-appraisal which is bound to follow an eclipse of so much distinguished work in that medium which Rembrandt transformed. In writing this book, I have ventured to express my own opinions concerning the work of some artists. It might have been more prudent had I been entirely objective, merely listing facts and mentioning what has been already recorded. Such a procedure, apart from its dullness, would have begged the question of separating the geese from the swans, which is an unenviable task and liable to criticism. Nevertheless, I think I may claim a right to express an opinion, since nobody has written at length on British etching for about forty years. As I worked towards this book, I had of necessity to use my own judgment and I consider the right to judge was increased by my study of and concern for etchings during a period of their almost total neglect by everybody concerned with art. Sometimes, I literally rescued good examples of them from destruction and many more from a dubious fate, and on at least two occasions received evidence of etching bonfires. It is my hope that this book may be the prelude to a comprehensive re-assessment and fuller cataloguing of the work of earlier twentieth century British etchers." A defective copy in that the 3 leaves with signed etchings (the title-page, pp 85-86 and 87-88) have been neatly excised and are not present. The book would otherwise be Very Good, with a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper.
