Condizione: Very Good. Second edition. A monumental work in the history of medicine, G.-B. Duchenne's De l'Électrisation Localisée (1861) marks one of the earliest systematic studies of neuromuscular physiology through electrical experimentation. In this groundbreaking second edition—entirely revised and expanded—Duchenne de Boulogne refines his pioneering method of localized electrization, applying it both diagnostically and therapeutically to paralysis, muscular atrophy, and nervous disorders. Through meticulous experimentation, Duchenne demonstrated how electricity could be used to isolate and stimulate individual muscle groups, effectively mapping the human body's neuromuscular responses. His work was foundational in establishing the discipline of clinical electrophysiology and directly influenced later neurological pioneers such as Charcot and Freud. The volume is richly illustrated with 179 finely executed anatomical and experimental figures, along with a large hand-colored fold-out lithographic plate depicting the musculature of the limbs and optic nerve. Duchenne's attention to visual precision and scientific documentation bridged medicine and art, introducing photography as a tool of physiological study in subsequent editions. Published by J.-B. Baillière et Fils, the premier medical publisher of 19th-century France, this edition represents the authoritative text of Duchenne's career. A landmark in the understanding of human movement, muscular pathology, and medical innovation, De l'Électrisation Localisée stands as a cornerstone in the evolution of neurology, electrotherapy, and experimental physiology. . Some rubbing to edges and minor cracking at hinges, but overall tight and well-preserved. Interior shows moderate age toning with occasional foxing and faint water staining to preliminaries. The fold-out chromolithograph plate remains bright and complete, showing fine anatomical detail. Condition: Very Good. The lithographic plate is by Lemercier et Cie., after Duchenneâs anatomical studies (illustratore).…

Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works.…

Map publ by Jean Covens et Mortier. 18" x 18". Antarctic hemisphere projection within ruled borders. Illustrates the World to the equator with land masses outlined in period color. The only Antarctic land mass noted is a vague outline of the "Cape des Terres Australes" south and west of the Cape of Good Hope. It shows no southern borders similar to the earlier theoretical Great South Land masses. Australia is shown without the east coast and New Guinea suggestively attached to it. Dampier & Tasman's routes are depicted. The New Hebrides are titled "Terre Australis ou St. Espirit" and suggest a possible east coast of Australia with large rivers, "Jordan" & "Sauyeur". Spence 3024B. In very good condition.…
