This edition presents Gustav Lange's accessible piano transcription, thoughtfully edited by Calvin Grooms, and issued as part of Century Music Publishing Company'…s Fantasies and Operatic Selections - Series Three. The ornate Art Nouveau-inspired cover design, together with the publisher's 'Century Certified Edition' imprint, makes this an attractive example of 1920s American educational sheet music. Bizet's Habanera remains one of the most recognizable melodies in the classical repertoire and continues to be a favorite among pianists, vocalists, teachers, and opera enthusiasts. Gustav Lange (1830 -1889) was a German pianist and composer renowned for his melodious salon pieces and piano arrangements that captured the light, elegant style of 19th-century parlor music. Born in Schwerstedt, near Erfurt, Prussian Saxony, Lange began piano and organ lessons with his father. He later studied at the Erfurt Conservatory under August Wilhelm Bach, and in Berlin with Eduard Grell and Albert Löschhorn. His training in piano, organ, thoroughbass, and composition laid the foundation for both performance and composition. From 1860 to 1870, Lange was a successful concert pianist in Berlin, known for his virtuosic technique and interpretive skill. In 1870, he shifted focus to composition, becoming a leading specialist in salon music - short, tuneful works for solo piano that appealed to bourgeois audiences. Lange composed around 500 works, including fantasias, polonaises, marches, barcarolles, mazurkas, and transcriptions. Among his best-known pieces, he composed Edelweiss (Op. 31) - a graceful waltz with alpine imagery that was notably featured in The Sound of Music.

"In the Mountains (Zitherklänge)" is a short Romantic-era character piece for piano that evokes the sound and atmosphere of alpine folk music. The subtitle "Zitherklä…nge," meaning "zither sounds," reflects the composer's intention to imitate the delicate, plucked sonority of the zither, an instrument closely associated with mountain regions in Central Europe. The music typically features a gently flowing melody accompanied by broken chords that suggest the shimmering resonance of the instrument, creating a calm, pastoral mood. Like many salon pieces of its time, it was written to be expressive yet accessible, making it popular among amateur pianists and well suited for intimate performance settings. Gustav Lange (1830-1889) was a German composer best known for his large output of salon music—short, lyrical piano works designed for home performance rather than the concert stage.
