J. 1800 in Tübingen den Doctorgrad erlangt hatte, daselbst als Arzt und Privatdocent; 1805 erhielt er einen Ruf als Professor der Anatomie…und Botanik nach Bern, 1815 einen solchen als Professor der Anatomie nach Tübingen, starb hier aber schon i. J. 1819 und zwar in Folge chronischer Vergiftung durch an sich selbst angestellte toxicologische Versuche. - E. war ein eifriger und ingeniöser Experimentator und zwar sowol auf dem Gebiete der Physiologie und Entwicklungsgeschichte, wie namentlich auf dem der Giftlehre; die von ihm an Menschen und Thieren angestellten toxicologischen Experimente nehmen unter den gleichartigen Leistungen jener Zeit eine hervorragende Stelle ein. Von seinen physiologischen Arbeiten (sämmtlich in dem Archiv der Physiologie von Reil, später von Meckel niedergelegt) verdienen vorzugsweise die Untersuchungen "Ueber die Veränderungen, welche einige Stoffe in dem Körper sowol hervorbringen als erleiden, wenn sie in die Bauchhöhle lebender Thiere gebracht werden" (in Meckel Deutsch. Arch. f. d. Physiol. 1820 VI. S. 1, erst nach seinem Tode von Bauer veröffentlicht), genannt zu werden; seine erste Arbeit toxicologischen Inhaltes, das Resultat zehnjähriger Studien über die physiologische Wirkung verschiedener Gifte an Thieren, hat er in der Salzburger med.-chir. Zeitung 1813 Nr. 61. III. S. 162, später derartige Arbeiten in den Tübinger Blättern für Naturwissenschaft 1816 II. S. 88, in Hufeland's Journal der Heilkunde und in Meckel's Deutschem Archiv niedergelegt; außerdem sind zwei unter seiner Leitung bearbeitete Dissertationen toxicologischen Inhaltes von Schabel und Emmer, der ebenfalls in Folge von an sich selbst angestellten Vergiftungsversuchen mit Veretrum und Helleborus zu Grunde ging, i. J. 1817 in Tübingen erschienen. Ein größeres Werk über Giftlehre, welches E. vorbereitete, ist unvollendet geblieben. (Aug. Gottfr. Ferd. E. ist mehrfach mit Karl Friedrich E., vielleicht einem jüngeren Bruder desselben, verwechselt worden, der ebenfalls in Göttingen geboren, 1805 in Tübingen zum Doctor der Medicin promovirt wurde, später Professor der Veterinärkunde in Bern, seit 1812 an Schiferli's Stelle Professor der Chirurgie und Geburtshülfe daselbst war und wahrscheinlich 1834 gestorben ist.)"
