Confessors, chaplains, teachers, preachers and members of church councils, they were acting in close proximity to the sovereigns and thus at the very center of political power, state representation and the definition of social norms. So far, however, few attempts have been made to shed light on the political role of clerical members of the court based on a regional and denominational approach. The contributions to this anthology assess the background, self-conception and status of the clerical elite as well as their actual power, prerequisites and limitations in their political operations between 1500 and 1800. They largely result from an international seminar at the "Herzog August Bibliothek" (library of Duke August of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel) in the fall of 2011. All in all, the volume provides a comprehensive overview of court clergy in Europe during the early modern age.
