Compiled by Authorities in Various Countries under the General Direction of Dr. Herman Schmitz, of the Schloss Museum, Berlin and with an Introduction by H.P. Shapland, editor of "The Cabinet Maker". Published by Ernest Benn Limited, London. Undated, but believed to be 1926. First edition. A burgundy cloth hardback, with gilt furniture motif to front cover and gilt titles to spine. Cover with sun fade marks, especially to rear, and spine is faded, and worn to head and tail. Some scuffing and bumping, with small circular mark to front. Condition is good overall. Inscribed owner's marks to first free endpaper, dated to 1930. Text pages have significant spotting - particularly at beginning and end and to edge of text block, and rear endpapers. In contrast the plates are lovely and clean, with a hint of age toning to extremities, but they provide an excellent visual reference. Text in English. xx + 63pp text + 320pp Plates. In fifty pages of introductory text, Dr. Schmitz, one time Director of the Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, presents an outline history of furniture. Inevitably superficial, this touches lightly on the interplay of influences affecting design, the ancestry of modern furniture, secular not ecclesiastical, the abiding influences of the classic designs, the "borrowing" on the part or the craftsmen of Great Britain from the Italian and Flemish designers, and from France. This is a very useful reference book for decorators, designers, theatrical producers, furntiure makers, etc. The American edition of this book was published in 1926. A heavy book.
