Der erste regulaere Anglistiklehrstuhl auf dem Kontinent wurde 1872 an der Universitaet Strassburg, die von Deutschland nach dem Sieg von 1870-71 wiederbegruendet worden war, geschaffen. Diese Etablierung, die die Entwicklung der Disziplin in Europa und darueber hinaus praegte, erklaert sich aus der allgemeinen und Wissenschaftsgeschichte der beiden Laender und der besonderen geopolitischen Lage des Elsass. In 2002, on the history of English studies in Strasbourg: the occasion was the 6th Conference of ESSE (European Society for the Study of English), the venue was Strasbourg.the conference was to commemorate the first Chair of ESSE, and the volume is the study resulting from the conference.
