Evocative and beautiful, this anthology tracks between the dualities of the rain-washed skies of Donoughmore, County Cork, and the Queensland rainforest and national and personal histories. Inspired by the poet's experiences near Blarney in Ireland as well as her New Zealand homeland and family, the lighthearted yet daring verses reflect a questing, generous, civilized mind. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The subtle and sophisticated poems in this collection artfully move across a spectrum of geographic and emotional landscapes. After shunning the physical reality of Antarcticas hazardous beauty in favor of exploring the inner world it inspires, the poet considers the urban nightmare of London after the 2005 bombings that killed her niece. Finally, a section based on artworks and memories weaves through love in the 1960s to the liveliness of contemporary New Zealand. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Lorna Staveley Anker was born in 1914. She used to joke that this was the cause of the First World War. In truth, the poems in this fine collection reveal her as New Zealand's first woman war poet. There are poems here that arise from her childhood memories of Kaiser Bill. Three of her uncles died in France. She was a 'war widow' in the Second World War, one of the civilian casualties who make up what is known as 'the unsung generation'. This collection contains the best of her published poems and a substantial number never seen before. Edited with loving care by Canterbury poet Bernadette Hall, this is a book that will open your eyes to our nation's invisible history, the story of a semmingly ordinary life that proves to be extraordinary in the telling. The poems in this fine collection reveal Lorna Staveley Anker as New Zealand's first woman war poet. She was a "war widow" of WWII--a civilian casualty in the "unsung generation." The event was a treat for the senses, listening to the poets give life to their words as they viewed the fine detail of the jewellery on video and being worn by models, all put to a back drop of beautiful music played by guitarist Matt Langley. Peter Hayden kept the crowd amused with introductions both humorous and informative.".
