Large Size Book.Summer has finally arrived in Paradise, Michigan, but Alex McKnight doesn't seem to notice the change in the weather. He's been retreating into his own private world for the past few months, and now he barely leaves his cabin except to go have his meals in the nearby Glasgow Inn. The inn's proprietor, Jackie Connery, is more and more concerned with Alex's state, and the last straw comes as he watches Alex morosely counting up his "failures" on the eve of his forty-ninth birthday-his marriage, his baseball career, his stint in the Detroit police. Jackie offers his friend an ultimatum: "Either I take you to the airport and put your ass on a plane to Moosehide, or you play poker with me tonight." The game takes place in a posh house near the water, and the other poker players are men Alex hardly knows. In the middle of the game, masked robbers invade the premises, hold the players at gunpoint, and proceed to rob the homeowner. Alex is roused back into action and so is his former detective partner, Leon Prudell. Working first against each other and later together, they discover that this is far more complex than a simple robbery and involves murder, greed, and revenge. A wild chase ensures on the waters of Lake Superior before Alex is forced to realize that there is no retreat from life-and that maybe this is a good thing.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.

Rivista / Giornale Prima edizione
Magazine. 32p., including covers, 5.5x8.5 inches, very good digest size magazine in stapled pictorial wraps. Cover story: "Is Your Child Homosexual?" Also: "Mission San Juan Capistrano". One, Inc., which took its name from Thomas Carlyle's statement that "A mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one," was founded in LA in 1952 as a homophile organization with connections to the Mattachine Society. As the first pro-gay journal of its kind, it serves as an important source for pre-Stonewall homophile studies. In 1954 the US Post Office declared it obscene, leading to a four-year legal battle (chronicled in its pages) that concluded with a favorable decision as part of Roth vs. United States. Aside from its articles covering topics ranging from the Beatniks and Gay marriage to homosexuality and national security, One Magazine also featured poetry and short fiction by numerous prominent authors.

Also included are two further productions both dedicated to Romantic poet James Russell Lowell: 'Hashishination (dedicated to James Russell Lowell)' by Dom Silvester Houedard [i.e Sylvester Houedard aka Dom Pierre-Sylvester Houedard] interpreted by Paul Ansell, and an uncredited work entitled 'Asphodel - Ode for James Russell Lowell'. From John Willett's preface: "In September 1966 a group of graphic design students at the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham began a postal collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay in Scotland. The scheme developed almost accidentally out of a previous (but still unpublished) series of Headlines-Pondlines for which John Furnival had done linocuts. Furnival's small daughter Eve sent Finlay the Flying Scotsman, complete with wings and kilt, now reproduced in varnish on the outside of the present portfolio. Finlay replied with thirteen postcards to Eve which arrived on consecutive days to form the series of Eavelines. Furnival took these to Corsham, where he teaches, and handed them over to thirteen students to print, using a variety of techniques and the school's own presses, under Finlay's distant eye". First two cards slightly rubbed. Some offsetting to the inner flap of outer folder, where the blue coloured card has left an imprint on the white underside of the adjacent inner flap. Outer case has some slight scuffing to the cloth hinge edges. Otherwise very good condition.
