Eher selten treten Menschen in seinen Gemälden auf, und wenn doch, erscheinen sie als Rückenfigur oder in alltägliche Handlungen vertieft. Erstmals wird hier die Rolle des Klangs in Hammershøis Bildwelten thematisiert. Der Maler spielte selbst Cello, und Musikinstrumente sind immer wieder Gegenstand seiner Kompositionen. Der Untertitel »Maler des stillen Klangs« beschreibt dabei nur vordergründig ein Paradoxon. Denn so »stumm« die Gemälde auf den ersten Blick auch wirken mögen: Es ist eine Stille, die der konzentrierten Ruhe unmittelbar vor einem Konzertbeginn gleicht. Eine Stille, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit einfordert und zum Hinhören einlädt - und so eine völlig neue Seite in der Kunst Hammershøis offenbart.Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) gilt als bedeutendster Vertreter der dänischen Interieurmalerei.
