In einer sparsamen Bildsprache und reduzierten Farbpalette schuf er Interieurs, die in ihrer Beschränkung auf das Wesentliche von überwältigend poetischem Reiz sind. Eher selten treten Menschen in seinen Gemälden auf, und wenn doch, erscheinen sie als Rückenfigur oder in alltägliche Handlungen vertieft. Zu Recht hat man Hammershøi daher als »Vermeer des Nordens« bezeichnet. Katalog und Ausstellung thematisieren erstmals die Rolle des Klangs in Hammershøis Bildwelten. Der Maler spielte selbst Cello, und Musikinstrumente sind immer wieder Gegenstand seiner Kompositionen. Der Untertitel »Maler des stillen Klangs« beschreibt dabei nur vordergründig ein Paradoxon. Denn so »stumm« die Gemälde auf den ersten Blick auch wirken mögen, ist es doch eine Stille, die der konzentrierten Ruhe unmittelbar vor einem Konzertbeginn gleicht. Eine Stille also, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit einfordert und zum Hinhören einlädt - und so eine völlig neue Seite in der Kunst Hammershøis offenbart. Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) gilt als bedeutendster Vertreter des dänischen Symbolismus. Bei seinem Tod war er ein europaweit gefeierter Maler, zu seinen Bewunderern zählten Rainer Maria Rilke und Emil Nolde. Später geriet sein Schaffen außerhalb seiner Heimat zunehmend in Vergessenheit, bis er gut hundert Jahre später europaweit »wiederentdeckt« wurde. Bis heute beeindrucken seine monochromen Interieurs, in deren meditativer Stille sich ein subtiles Spiel aus Licht und Schatten entfaltet.
