Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Hardcover. Bound in brown cloth with gilt publishers mark on the cover. Gilt text on the spine. Born in Scotland of English parents, Shaw was ordained as a Methodist chaplain to the Sephton party, one of the many organized groups that made up the 1820 English settler movement in the eastern Cape Colony of what is now South Africa. He was appointed to the white settlers but also to further mission among the indigenous peoples. He spent his first three years building up a strong Methodist church in the new settler community, which by 1824 counted twelve congregations. A strong settler church, he insisted, was the essential base for a mission to the African peoples. It was not until 1824 that work began among the neighboring Xhosa-speaking population, though Methodist success was not primarily among the Xhosa but among the Mfengu refugees driven from their lands by the Zulu. This linking of the settler and mission churches set a course that resulted in twentieth-century Methodism in South Africa being one church. However, in Shaw?s lifetime it produced great tension, since too often funds from England were swallowed up in keeping the settler base strong. Also, in the terrible period of bloody conflict with the Xhosa between 1834 and 1852, Shaw appeared as a spokesman of the settlers. However, it was also true that he fought for the African education against settler opinion and always criticized gross injustice. Having retired to England in 1856, he was still concerned for South Africa and in 1860 proposed that an autonomous South African Methodist Conference be established, but the Methodist authorities in Britain refused approval. He retired from the active ministry in 1869. 220pp.CONDITION: Covers are unmarked. Pages are crisp and clean. Binding and text block are sound. Full refund if not satisfied.

"The main focus is upon the status and function of the location headman in a structure that included magistrate, chief, district councillors and people; and on the conflicts inherent in changing from a traditional system of rule by consensus to one of rule by bureaucratic command. The analysis is made at three stages, the annexation political systems, the Direct Rule system (1894-1955) and the Bantu Authority system. This research is amplified and made vivid by detailed and often lively case histories showing how headmen and others in authority have dealt with situations requiring their arbitration.".

The study was a pioneer of its kind. This completely revised and rewritten version of Schapera's classic work constitutes an up-to-date, definitive study of the Bantu-speaking peoples of the Republic of South Africa and the surrounding territories. . The volume includes a detailed account of the latest researches on the biology of the South African Negro and discussion of his habitat, tribal classifications and material culture. The main features of the traditional social systems are described in chapters covering the economic systems, kinship and marriage, socialization, political organizations, law and justice, and magico-religious beliefs. A final section traces the process of political and economic incorporation into modern, industrialized society, and the impact of Christianity and urbanization.".

It is dedicated by the authors to all artists of Africa, past and present, who have sought to express the significance of things in objects of great beauty. Completely up to date, it contains sections on San Rock Art, Venda Court Art, Ndzundza Wall Decorations in the Transvaal, Images of Township Art, Street Art in the Townships and the Polly Street Art Centre. As the work of black artists is sought by collectors here and overseas, more people become aware of symbols and themes used; serious students add constantly to the sum of this knowledge. The future will bring an even greater depth of insight into the evolution of the African artistic tradition to which this book will have contributed.".
