Das Zusammenspiel der Einzelteile wird weitgehend durch das Betriebssystem überwacht, weshalb auch die Software in die Betrachtung einfließt. Zudem werden durch Methoden der Informatik aus der Abstraktion realer Rechnerkonfigurationen und den anfallenden Aufgabenprofilen optimale Problemlösungen entwickelt. Rechnerarchitektur befasst sich nicht nur mit der Bestandsaufnahme bestehender Modelle, sondern auch mit deren Kategorisierung und kritischen Bewertung nach verschiedenen Kriterien. Schließlich wird der Entwurfsprozess von Rechenanlagen bei gegebener Aufgabenstellung beschrieben, um praktische Hilfen für die einzelnen Entwurfsentscheidungen zu bieten.
