Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 215 Pages Indexed. Minor cover edge wear and cover and first few pages have slightly upturned corners. No marks or stamps on this straight tight book. Slavery challenged the mounting tide of reform sentiment that spread through the United States after 1820. Earnest men and women began to d…evote their lives to the suppression of the intolerable evil of human slavery. The abolition movement grew rapidly. Behind this was the idea that men could effect change with moral ideas. Progress demanded that only that the corrupting elements be removed by reforms --- abolition, universal education, temperance and a host of other issues that absorbed the energies of Americans from 1820 to 1860. William Lloyd Garrison was intimately associated with all of these ideas. Contents in Seven Chapters: My Name Shall Be Known, I Will Be Heard, Ours Is a Moral Crusade, We Have Made Clean Work, No Union with Slaveholders, It Is the Bright Noon of Day, and TDo Finish It Up. Plus Epilogue and sources.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Good. Third Printing. 189 pages indexed. A Library of American Biograph;y Publication. Line drawn cover illustration of the portrait frontispiece. Some of the first 35 pages have underlining and there are notes on the endpapers. Biography of the 19th Century New York abolitionist and later champion f…or fundamental women's rights. A long life brought Elizabeth Stanton through the Civil War, through national expansion and industrialization and on into the complex culture of the United States at the end of the 19th century. She bore a vision of liberation that she expressed inn a unique vigorous fashion, constantly exploring its implications. She was far from being a fanatical reformer but a warm, fun loving woman that led a full life applying herself enthusiastically in pursuit of her goals. This is a lively account of the woman and her campaigns that throws light on many aspects of the development of American society.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. Re-issue. Herbert Hoover's place of birth was the American heartland; but for much of his life, he was a stranger to his native country, and never more so than while he was its president. His career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States - not quite the log cabin to the White… House, but almost. Humble birth, hard work, the desire for achievement and finally, wealth, public service and the presidency formed a progression recognizable in much of the national experience. There was continuity with the past also in the values Hoover acquired in his youth and which stayed with him through life. The great crisis of Hoover's life was the depression, which ironically began soon after he took office in 1929. He then had to ask whether those values were still appropriate; and the answer he gave differed so markedly from that given by his countrymen that a gulf. opened between him and them that was never to be bridged in his lifetime. Perhaps because he felt that the burden of blame -for the depression thrust upon him was unfair, he remained out of step. In the years of the world's peril after 1939, he fought a lonely battle against the dominant opinion that the fate of the United States could not be detached from the fate of men elsewhere. He died unpopular and isolated -largely disavowed by his own party and embittered by the lack of understanding. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 307 pages. some ink underlining & margin marks. no Dust Jacket as published. White titles spine & front. illustrated by a few b/w. drawings (cartoons). Includes acknowlegements, sources & index. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.
