Its history, the methods for gathering data and the publication of linguistic atlases, the most important research tool of dialectometry, are dealt with. Then the steps in the creation of "dialectometric flow charts" are discussed: 1) construction of a data matrix, 2) selection and definition of similarity and distance indices, 3) calculation of similarity and distance matrices, 4) processing of the quantitative information contained in them by means of univariate and multivariate statistical methods, 5) visualisation of the results by means of diverse thematic maps: similarity, parameter, honeycomb and beams maps, hier archie al-agglomerative tree diagrams with spatial information and so-called correlation maps. The latter provide insights in relationships between linguistic and geographical affinities and proximities not realized so far. For the examples taken from the Atlas linguistique de la France (ALF) the relevant data were processed with a computer program designed by Edgar HAIMERL, Visual Dialectometry (VDM), that is available for research purposes free of charge. Zusammenfassung: In diesem explizit als Brückenschlag zwischen der genuinen Fach- und der romanischen Sprachgeographie konzipierten Beitrag werden die wichtigsten Probleme und Methoden der seit 1973 (Jean Séguy) existierenden Dialektometrie vorgestellt, die sachlich den quantitativ arbeitenden Flügel der traditionellen Sprachgeographie repräsentiert. Nach einer kurzen Evokation der Geschichte der Sprachgeographie wird deren wichtigstes empirisches Hilfsmittel, der Sprachatlas, vorgestellt. Konkret geht es in diesem Beitrag um den Atlas linguistique de la France (ALF) und die auf dessen 1.421 Sprachkarten reflektierte diatopische Sprachvariation der Galloromania. Anschließend wird die dialektometrische Verfahrenskette präsentiert, welche die folgenden Glieder enthält: 1 ) Erstellung der Datenmatrix, 2) Wahl des Ähnlichkeits- und Distanzmaßes, 3) Berechnung der Ähnlichkeits- und Distanzmatrix, 4) uni- und multivariate Auswertung derselben. Diese führt zu verschiedenen thematischen Visualisierungen bzw. Kartierungen (wie Ähnlichkeits-, Parameter-, Schotten- und Strahlenkarten), zu denen auch räumliche Umlegungen (Spatialisierungen) von hierarchisch-agglomerativen Baumanalysen sowie Korrelationenkarten gehören. Letztere zeigen bislang unbekannte Beziehungen zwischen sprachlicher und geographischer Affinität bzw. Proximität auf. Die 24 Farbkarten des Anhangs wurden mittels eines speziell für dialektometrische Zwecke von Edgar Haimerl erstellten Computerprogramms namens Visual Dialectometry (VDM) generiert, das für Forschungszwecke frei zugänglich ist. - Wikipedia: Hans Goebl (* 2.
