Jubelnde Massen am Heldenplatz, junge Frauen und Manner in Festtagstracht, Polizisten und Soldaten mischen sich unter Zivilisten; strahlende Gesichter, Hande ausgestreckt, die Rufe ,Heil Hitler" und ,Sieg Heil" hallen durch die Luft, wahrend Hitler… in einem offenen Mercedes durch Osterreich fahrt. Diese Bilder pragen das Bild des ,Anschlusses" und der nationalsozialistischen Machtubernahme in Osterreich im Marz 1938. Doch neben den bekannten Jubelbildern gibt es eine ungeschriebene Geschichte von Bildern, die nicht in die nationalsozialistische Propaganda passten und daher nicht in den Printmedien veroffentlicht wurden. Diese Fotografien blieben als Negativmaterial in Archiven verborgen, weil sie den Fotografen aus technischen oder inhaltlichen Grunden nicht gefielen. Auch Privataufnahmen finden nur langsam ihren Weg in die Archive, oft aus Identifikation oder Scham der Besitzer. Eine Vielzahl unbekannter Geschichtsbilder existiert in privaten und offentlichen Archiven. Viele davon werden hier erstmals vorgestellt und in einen historischen Kontext eingeordnet: die Vorgeschichte der Anschlussidee, soziale und wirtschaftliche Probleme der Zwischenkriegszeit, Hitlers aggressive Politik, die letzten Versuche, Osterreichs Selbstandigkeit zu bewahren, die Demutigung und Verfolgung der Juden, die Propagandaschlacht bis zur ,Volksabstimmung" am 10. April und die Ereignisse der Reichsprogromnacht am 11. November 1938.
