With beautiful color illustrations to every page by Jean-Jacques Waltz ("l'Oncle Hansi"). depicting life, customs, school, businesses, crafts, and traditional costume in a village in Alsace. J-J Waltz (1873-1951) was dedicated to French Alsace, and during German occupations he was imprisoned in both World Wars for ridiculing the Germans in his drawings and books. A beautiful book, but the paper has aged, resulting in light discoloration to the edges, bits missing at corners, and detachment of the half-title. So a fair only copy in cloth boards with illustration and a floral pattern, quite worn at extremities.

Er war ein französischer Karikaturist, der in diesem Buch seine pro-französischen elsässischen Gefühle gegenüber der Annexion des Elsass durch Deutschland. Laid in is a manuscript translation of the text into English -- 25 pages, plus a title leaf, in beautiful handwriting. Bottom corner is bumped, but this is a more than presentable copy, with no marks of any kind. A work dedicated to freedom for his fellow comrade in Alsace, the title bespeaks Waltz' nationalistic leadings. Patterned endpapers, and board charmingly bound in striped fabric of Alsace; with evocative illustrations, many of them full page. A light stain to the front board; otherwise a clean and bright copy. Condizione: Bon. 2ème Édition. rare album de 1915 avec ses 16 hors texte reliure toilée signée ENGEL illustrations de HANSI La parution de L'histoire d'Alsace vaut à Hansi une condamnation devant les tribunaux allemands, le 9 mai 1913. Ceux-ci goûtent peu l'humour un peu vif dont est parsemé le livre, et condamnent Hansi à une forte amende lors du « procès des faméliques » . Le livre, malgré le procès (ou bien conforté par lui) eut beaucoup de succès. En 1914, Hansi est de nouveau condamné, cette fois à de la prison ferme. Il gagne la France où il s'engage, à 41 ans, dans l'armée française comme interpréte l'album eut sa 1e édition en 1912 avec 99 pages en 1915 son édition passa à 104 pages (pages à mes petits neveux avec un hors-texte supplémentaire SAVERNE).
