Vergilbt, berieben, etwas bestoßen, insgesamt altersentsprechend guter Zustand. - Vorwort: Die Arbeit, die ich hiermit vorlege, gründet sich auf ein 25-jährigcs Studium der Sprache, Sitten, Religion, Kultur und Geschichte jener Völkerschaften, die im heutigen Südrhodesien leben und mit denen ich s…eit 1926 in nächster Berührung gestanden habe. Leider gibt es immer noch nur wenige Quellen über dieselben, die es verdienen, ernst genommen zu werden. Die Forschung hat sich bisher vor allem auf die grossen Zimbabwe-Ruhien konzentriert, deren Rätsel, falls man nun noch immer von einem solchen sprechen kann , jedoch unmöglich isoliert gelöst werden kann, und die ich dalier in dieser Arbeit nur nebenbei erwähne. Die grossen Zusammenhänge dagegen sind bisher von der Forschung kaum in Angriff genommen worden. Dass meine Arbeit in den Studia Ethnographica Upsalicnsia veröffentlicht wird, habe ich aus-schliesslich Herrn Dozenten S. Lagercrantz zu verdanken, der auch die grosse Mühe der Redaktionsarbeit auf sich genommen hat. Besondern Dank bin ich Herrn Missionsdirektor G. Brennecke und Herrn Ptof. D. S. Knak für ihre Liebenswürdigkeit schuldig, mir die Forschung im Archiv der Berliner Mission sgcsellschaft ermöglicht zu haben. Manches verdanke ich auch Mr. E. Burke, dem Bibliothekar der Central African Archives, Salisbury und Mr. R. Summers vom Nationalmuseum in Bulawayo. Für viele Hinweise, die Ostafrika betreffen, bin ich Herrn Dozent H. TegNAEUS, Uppsala zu tiefstem Dank verpflichtet. Bedeutende Beiträge des Humanistiska Fonden" und Samhällsvctcnskapiiga Forsknings-rädet" in Stockholm, für deren Erlangung sich wieder Herr Dozent S. Lagercrantz eingesetzt hat, ermöglichten den Druck dieser Arbeit. Ihnen geziemt mein aufrichtigster Dank. Die vorliegende Arbeit berührt im doppelten Sinne ein Grenzgebiet, handelt es sich doch in ihr um Probleme, deren Geschichte sich zu beiden Seiten des Limpopo abspielt, in Rhodesien sowohl ah auch in der Südafrikanischen Union, so dass ich ohne Herrn Dr. J. van W armelos freundliches Entgegenkommen sie niemals hätte veröffentlichen können. Auch ihm möchte ich daher meinen sehr herzlichen Dank aussprechen. Zugleich aber liegt meine Arbeit an der Grenze eines Gebietes, wo sich Ethnologie, Religions-gescliichte und Missions-Theologie berühren und in einander übergehen. Zu ihrer Vollendung stand mir nur ein Urlaub von anderthalb Jahren in Schweden zur Verfügung. Ich möchte dem Vorstand der Schwedischen Kirchenmission auch an dieser Stelle meinen aufrichtigen Dank für das Verständnis aussprechen, den er meiner Arbeit entgegengebracht hat und dass er mir die Zeit für siezur Verfügung stellte. Ich bin mir mancher Lücken und Fehlerhaftigkeiten in der Arbeit wohl bewusst. Besonders wünschenswert wäre es mir erschienen, dem Problem, das ich hier angeschnitten habe, auch in Westafrika nachzugehen. Ich hoffe aber, dass die Arbeit auch so, wie sie jetzt vorliegt, neues Interesse für die bisher von der Forschung doch recht stark vernachlässigten Karanga und neue Liebe zu ihnen wecken möge.
