Mit einer strategischen Literaturrecherche wurden die Studienergebnisse von Originalarbeiten gesammelt und ausgewertet. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Erfassung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Alexithymie und Herzschlagwahrnehmung. Mit dieser Arbeit soll Alexithymie als besonderer Bestandteil von psychischen Störungen hervorgehoben werden. Durch das Verständnis der Symptome und Ursachen könnte ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Behandlung psychischer Störungen geleistet werden. Alexithymie ist nicht nur häufig ein Bestandteil psychischer Störungen, sondern findet sich auch in der Allgemeinbevölkerung wieder. Die Behandlung könnte somit eine präventive Grundlage für die Vermeidung psychischer Störungen darstellen.Starke Emotionen gehen mit körperlichen Veränderungen einher. Die James-Lange-Theorie (1884) besagt, dass die Wahrnehmung dieser körperlichen Veränderungen ausschlaggebend für das Entstehen der Emotion ist. Diese Theorie wurde 1994 von Damasio weiterentwickelt zu seiner Theorie der somatischen Marker, welche im Gehirn abgespeichert werden. Körperliche Reaktionen auf einen Reiz stellen einen somatischen Marker dar, welcher darüber entscheidet, ob wir in einer zukünftigen ähnlichen Situation noch einmal gleich reagieren, oder ob die abgespeicherte Emotion negativ ist und wir uns für ein anderes Verhalten entscheiden. Ist eine Person nicht fähig, die eigenen Emotionen wahrzunehmen oder zu beschreiben, so spricht man von Alexithymie. Die Fähigkeit körperliche Veränderungen wahrzunehmen nennt man Interozeption. Teil dieser ist die Herzschlagwahrnehmung. Ein Zusammenhang dieser beiden Faktoren wurde mittels einer systematischen Literaturrecherche überprüft. Durch diese wurde ein Überblick über den derzeitigen Forschungsstand gewonnen. Insgesamt wurden acht Studien ausgewertet. Die zwei Studien mit gesunden Probanden ließen Schlüsse auf einen Zusammenhang der beiden Faktoren zu. Die sechs anderen Studien untersuchten Probanden mit unterschiedlichen Störungsbildern. Es ließ sich feststellen, dass Personen mit einer geringeren Herzschlagwahrnehmung auch höhere Alexithymie Werte aufweisen.
