FIRST EDITION, 139/150 COPIES signed by Morrison & Burdekin, vignette to title-page, 50 photogravure plates printed in blue to each recto with caption to facing verso, a couple of pages in prelims with arcing crease to lower half, a couple of light spots at head of prelims, pp. [viii] + Plates, original deluxe binding of full vellum, lettered in gilt to backstrip and upper board, in the case of the latter with a border of asterisks, the boards bowing a little (more so the upper) with a few little marks, a little darkened and faintly spotted to backstrip and borders, photographic endpapers, very good. This deluxe edition is uncommon. Preceding Bill Brandt's 'A Night in London' by four years, the model of Paul Morand and Brassaï's 1932 'Paris de Nuit' is acknowledged in John Morrison's introduction, which soon becomes a little ecstatic in its attempts to capture the scene in prose - 'She [Night] is mystery, fantasy, dream the unsolved riddle, the unguessed secret [.] the darkness of the womb, pulsating with the myriad forms of life [.] the mother of mysteries, the keeper of the keys [etc.]'. The photographs, in which Morrison assisted Burdekin, are rather more successful. …

Morrison and Burdekin were inspired by Braissaï's Paris de nuit (Paris at Night), which was published the previous year. Their nocturnal photographs document London before the blitz.
