Two double weight photographs from the 1990 US / German co-production. With the stamp of photographer Alan Pappe, and manuscript annotations identifying the film on the versos. Struck by Pappe circa 1990s, from his archive. Pappe worked as a film still and press photographer for 30 years, photographing a who's who of film and mu…sic stars, including iconic images of Sharon Tate, Jimi Hendrix, and Liza Minnelli, as well as album cover for the "Grease" soundtrack album, and the interior images of Jefferson Airplane's "After Bathing at Baxter's." His 1972 "Time" magazine cover photograph of Minnelli in "Cabaret" is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, which envisions a dystopian future in which fertile women are forced to become sexual surrogates for wealthy, childless families. The story of an industrial tycoon who comes to believe that his new secretary, second wife, and brother-in-law are all conspiring against him, to the point where his health is affected by the conviction. The Pinter-Losey collaboration is considered a landmark of British New Wave cinema, noted for its claustrophobic depiction of class manipulation and psychological power games. The film marked the first of three major collaborations between Losey and Pinter, followed by Accident and The Go-Between.

The Caretaker opened at the Lyceum Theatre on October 4, 1961, for a run of 165 perform…ances, closing on February 24, 1962. Harold Pinter's sixth major work and first commercial success, a tragicomedy highly indebted to Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot (1953). The play premiered at the Arts Theatre Club in London in April of 1960, transferring to the Duchess Theatre a month later, then, after 444 performances, to Broadway in 1961, where it starred Alan Bates, Donald Pleasence, and Robert Shaw. Nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Actor in a Play for Donald Pleasance, and Best Direction of a Play for Donald McWhinnie. Revived twice on Broadway, in 1986 and 2004.
