Soft cover. Condizione: VG. No Jacket. 1st. During WWI more that 100,000 young NZ soldiers served on the battlefields of that conflict. This collection of extracts from letters written to family and friends at home paints a more poignant and unvarnished picture of life on the different fronts than that depicted in formal histories. Nearly NZ 17,000 soldiers died of combat causes and another 1000 from injuries shortly after hostilities ended while thousands were wounded. Only 35 of those soldiers are represented in this collection of letters and many of the correspondants also lost their lives. One writer had three other brothers serving in the NZ forces, three brothers were killed, the one who survived returned home severely wounded --- a grim example of the dreadful cost to NZ of WWI. The letters are arranged in campaign sequence beginning with Gallipoli then France and the Western Front 1916, Sinai- Palestine, Western Front-France and Belgium 1917 and Western Front 1918. First edition of 2001 from Harper Collins, 168 pages including endnotes, bibliography and index, numerous small portrait photos, some group photos plus a number of general scenes, several maps and drawings included with letters. Tinted pictorial card covers VG with light damage to corners, internally VG with corner turn-over light creases some pages, no inscriptions. Photos Maps, Drawings (illustratore).…

Condizione: FINE. ANZAC Military History NEW ZEALAND -The Gallipoli campaign looms large in New Zealand's cultural memory. For the first time in this book, historian Glyn Harper tells the story of the campaign in the words of the New Zealand soldiers who were there.Having worked through archives in New Zealand and overseas, combed newspapers, and conducted a national call-out to descendents of Gallipoli soldiers, Harper has assembled over 500 letters home, of which 150 will be included in this book, most of them never previously published. After a thorough introduction to New Zealand's involvement in the Gallipoli campaign, the book looks closely at key events - from preparation and landing to the attack on the Daisy Patch, the burial truce, and the seizure of Chunuk Bair - through annotated and illustrated letters. With detailed discussion of the letter writers and what they were experiencing, enhanced by newly commissioned maps and photographs, Glyn Harper's Letters from Gallipoli is a powerful, authoritative, first-person account of this pivotal event in New Zealand's history. xiv, 330 p. : ill., maps ; 24 cm. First Edition Includes bibliographical references (p. 322-323) and index.
