Their work was part of a collective explosion of African-American creativity that defined the era's literary landscape. Lance Jeffers (1919Ð1985) whose work was known for it exploration of the African American experience went on to publish many volumes of poetry; Julia Fields, who was championed by Langston Hughes also published several influential collections as well as an award-winning childrenÕs book; William J. Harris was both a prolific poet and leading scholar on Amiri Baraka. Each section is preceded by a brief biographical note on the poet.
