Kroll, and a handful of other artists. Samuel Edward Lowe (1884-1952) was hired around 1916 as one of the first salesmen for Whitman Publishing and within a few years had worked his way up to President. In 1940, he left Whitman to establish his own rival firm, the Samuel E. Lowe Company. He was the author of several children's books, including some that he wrote under the pseudonym Helen Hart (e.g. Bunny-boy and His Magic Umbrella, The Red Cross Girls at Work, Mary Lee the Red Cross Girl, and five volumes in the Campfire Girls series).
