The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The spine has a bit of light fading. There is one small spot of discoloration to the front cover. The rear inner hinge has cracked. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front pastedown page and again on the front endpaper. There is also a previous owner's ink stamped name and address on the reverse of the front endpaper and title page. "Thomas Day (22 June 1748 28 September 1789) was a British author and abolitionist. He was well known for the book The History of Sandford and Merton (17831789) which emphasized Rousseauvian educational ideals. ".

Condizione: Very Good. 1852 first printing of the Cecil Hartley corrected and revised English translation of the 1804 fictional educational travel narrative, originally written in French by Louis-François Jauffret and designed to teach young readers about geography, natural history and world cultures through the supposed adventures of a traveller named Rolando. Very attractive hardback bound in olive cloth with elaborate embossed borders and decorative gilt motifs and lettering on the front board and spine. In very good condition, spine and edges of boards sunned, ends and corners lightly bumped, some scattered foxing and staining. 506pp plus 2pp catalogue, with a Preface by Hartley dated 1 January 1852; the 34 chapters following Rolando's extensive travels across several continents, blending moral instruction with the geographical knowledge of the Napoleonic era, several of the tales illustrated by William Harvey's black and white full page engravings.
