Hasket traces the evolution of local indigenous town government in the Cuernavaca area from the conquest until the eve of independence from Spain. His theme is that of adoption and continuity on the past of the indigenous ruling elite--the preservation of its political hegemony, social prestige and wealth throughout the centuries, if not completely undiminished, then at least in greater degree than we have been wont to believe. In this, Haskett's study takes issue with the conventional wisdom that is least in the institutions of local government--the cabildos superimposed by the Spanish regime on the native altepetl (city state) structures--preconquest political arrangements were massively simplified, native social compressed and indigenous elites replaced wholesale by arriviste components. Formerly called Cuauhnahuac, the city was renamed by the Spanish in the sixteenth century when Hernando Cortes built his stone palacio on its main square and thrust Cuernavaca into the colonial age.In Visions of Paradise, Robert Haskett presents a history of Cuernavaca, basing his account on an important body of late-seventeenth-century historical records known as primordial titles, written by still unknown members of the Native population. Until comparatively recently, these indigenous-language documents have been dismissed as ""false"" or ""forged"" land records.
